Verbit Rektiot #4

ALLATIVE (-lle)

1. nauraa - to laugh (at)

Hän nauroi minulle. - He laughed at me.

2.  antaa - to give, sanoa - to say, selittää - to explain (the same meaning as in English “to you”, “to me”, etc.)

Hän antoi sen sinulle. - He gave it to you. 

Hän sanoi minulle, että sinä olet väärässä. - He said to me that you are wrong. 

Hän selitti minulle kaiken. - He explained to me everything. 

3. soittaa - to call (by phone)

Hän soitti Timolle jo. - I called Timo already.   

Huom: If you call a place/agency use -MIHIN muoto i.e. Soita hätänumeroon. - Call the emergency number. 

4. mennä - to go,  saapua - to arrive, tulla - to come (any verb with movement, if the destination location is a open/outside place!)

Hän meni rannalle. - He went to the shore. 

Hän saapui torille. - He arrived at the market square.

Hän oli jo tullut kirkolle. - He had already come to [the] church.

5. hakea - to apply

Kuka voi hakea kurssille? - Who can apply for the course? 

Huom: If you are applying for a work or a place it’s actually partitive: 

Haen työpaikkaa. - I apply for work. Haen virkaa. - I apply for a position. Hain päivärahaa. - I applied for daily allowance money. 

Huom: It can also be -mihin form too:

Haen yliopistoon. - I apply for university.    Haen kouluun. - I apply for [a] school.

6. olla kateellinen - to be jealous

Minä olen kateellinen kaikille, joilla on kaunis ja nätti koti. - I’m jealous of everyone, who has a beautiful and pretty home. 

7. altistua - to be exposed to (intrans)

Hän on altistunut syöpää aiheuttaville aineille. - He has been exposed to cancer causing substances.

8. rakentaa - to build (trans), in Finnish one says, build to somewhere (+lle)

Voit rakentaa tilalle unelmiesi talon. - You may build in the space your house. 

9. merkitä - to mean, to signify

Mitä se merkitsee meille? - What does it mean to us?

merkitys - meaning, significance

Sen merkitys on minulle se, että minun äitini osti sen minulle.

Rektio #6

Ablative (-lta/ltä)

1. tuntua - to feel (intrans)

Joskus elämä tuntuu vaikealta. - Somtimes life feels difficult. 

2. maistua - to taste

Kyllä tämä jälkiruoka maistuu hyvältä. - Yes this desert taste good.

3. kysyä - to ask 

Voisitko kysyä häneltä tästä? - Could you ask him about this? 

4. näyttää - to look (intrans)

Vitsi hän näyttää hyvältä tänään. - Wow he/she looks good today.

5. kuulostaa - to sound 

No se kuulostaa monimutkaiselta minulle. - Well it sounds complex to me. 

6. lainata - to borrow

Haluaisin lainata tämän sinulta, jos sopii. - I would like to borrow this from you, if it suits. 

7. suojata - to protect (trans)

Aurinkorasva suojaa ihoa palamiselta. - Sunscreen protects skin from burning. 

8. haluta - to want 

Mitä sinä haluat elämältäsi? - What do you want from your life? 

9. toimia - to work as, function as

Tämä toimi aluksi harrastuspohjalta. - This functions at the start as a hobby.

If you are trying not to confuse -STA and -LTA endings then remember that generally speaking “LTA” means “from”, where and “STA” means “about”. If you think about “-sta” as meaning “about” then:

Kysyn häneltä kirjasta. - I will ask FROM him ABOUT the book. 

[Yes the except to this is for movement - in the case of movement -sta means from inside and -lta mean from on top of. Plus -sta is used to indicate where someone is from... “Olen kotoisin Australiasta. - I’m from Australia.“]

Finnish rektio - verbs, interacting with others

to be proud of - ylpeä + sta

Minä olen ylpeä sinusta. - I am proud of you. 

Hän oli ylpeä itsestään. - He was proud of himself. 

to be envious/jealous - kateellinen + lle

Aikaisemmin minä olin kateellinen ystävilleni. - Previously, I was envious of my friends. 

to laugh at - nauraa + lle

Hän nauroi minulle. - He laughed at me. 

to lie to - valehdella + lle 

Sinä olet valehdellut minulle niin monta kertaa. - You have lied to me so many times.

Muista partitiiviverbit:

to blame - syyttää + partitiivi 

Hän syyttää sinua. - He blames you. 

to tickle - kutittaa + partitiivi 

Aikuinen kutittaa lasta. - The adult tickles the child. 

ihailla - to admire + partitiivi 

Minä olen aina ihaillut häntä. - I have always admired him. 

to bully - kiusata + partitiivi

Hän kiusaa häntä. - He bullies him. 

käyttää hyväkseen - to take advantage of + partitiivi 

Hän käytti sinua hyväkseen. - He took advantage of you. 

And of course other emotion verbs:

to love, to hate, to need, to loath, to miss, to help

rakastaa, vihata, tarvita, inhota, kaivata, auttaa
