Verb of the day: ylpeillä

ylpeillä jollakin = to boast about something

Hän ylpeili sillä, että ... = He boasted that...

Hän ylpeili sillä, että hän muisti valokuvantarkasti kaikki asiakirjat. = He boasted that he remember all documents with photographic accuracy.

Nainen ylpeili teollaan sosiaalisessa mediassa. = The woman bragged about the act/action in social media.

ottaa yhteen: to engage, to fight, to cross swords

Poliisi ja mielenosoittajat ottivat yhteen. - The police and demonstrators clashed.

ottaa yhteyttä: to get in contact

Otan yhteyttä hänen kanssa ensi viikolla. - I will get in contact with him next week. 

ottaa kantaa: to take a stance, or a position

Poliitikkojen pitää ottaa kantaa hoidon priorisointiin. - Politicians should take a stand about care prioritisation. 

ottaa huomioon: to take note of, to take into account

Mitä yli 70-vuotiaan pitää ottaa huomioon koronavirustilanteessa? - What things must over 70s take notice of during the coronavirus?

ottaa käyttöön: to put into use

Työnhakusivusto otti käyttöön sukupuolineutraalit ammattinimikkeet. - Work search web page started using general neutral job titles.

ottaa lääke: to take medicine 

Mihin aikaan päivästä otan lääkkeen? - What time of the day do I take the medicine?

Slightly advanced Finnish verbs

This is just me trying to invent some ways to remember these slightly difficult Finnish verbs. 

raapia - to scrap, to scratch  raappa is a scraper (like you would use to clean the car in the winter), so of course the verb raapia is what you do with a raappa 

enteillä - to foreshadow  enne is an omen, so enteillä means something is coming

kummastella - to be amazed, astonished (syn: hämmästellä) kumma/kummallinen means odd/weird, so kummastella is be amazed/confused with the strangeness of something 

avartaa - to broaden avaruus is ‘outer space’ and also ‘spaciousness’ in general, so avartaa is to become more spacious/broaden/widen 

pistäytyä - to pop in for a visit (intrans) piste is a point, so pistäytyä is just being a point/place for a while

venyttää - to stretch (trans) venytys is a stretch, venyttää is what you do before exercise to stretch and warm up, but also can just mean in general to ‘stretch something’ and make it longer.  

sulautua - to merge, to become one, to blends in sulaa means to melt (intrans), and sulattaa means to cause something to melt (trans). So this verb is very easy to confuse with those, but the phrase I got this verb from was “Kun sulautuu, moni ovi avautuu” (When one blends in, many doors open). So I may try to use that to remember this verb. 

rapistua - to deteriorate (intrans) I think a synonym would be ‘huonontua’, but unfortunately I have no good way to remember this one yet.

narskua - to make a grinding/crutching sound (i.e. when you walk on snow) I have also no way of remembering this, other it’s so absurd to me and I can’t really think of a good translation for in English.

to be proud of - ylpeä + sta

Minä olen ylpeä sinusta. - I am proud of you. 

Hän oli ylpeä itsestään. - He was proud of himself. 

to be envious/jealous - kateellinen + lle

Aikaisemmin minä olin kateellinen ystävilleni. - Previously, I was envious of my friends. 

to laugh at - nauraa + lle

Hän nauroi minulle. - He laughed at me. 

to lie to - valehdella + lle 

Sinä olet valehdellut minulle niin monta kertaa. - You have lied to me so many times.

Muista partitiiviverbit:

to blame - syyttää + partitiivi 

Hän syyttää sinua. - He blames you. 

to tickle - kutittaa + partitiivi 

Aikuinen kutittaa lasta. - The adult tickles the child. 

ihailla - to admire + partitiivi 

Minä olen aina ihaillut häntä. - I have always admired him. 

to bully - kiusata + partitiivi

Hän kiusaa häntä. - He bullies him. 

käyttää hyväkseen - to take advantage of + partitiivi 

Hän käytti sinua hyväkseen. - He took advantage of you.

ELATIVE (-sta/stä)

1. poiketa - to differ from, to deviate from

Tämä ei ole syy poiketa rajoituksesta. - This isn’t a reason to deviate from the restrictions. 

2. myöhästyä - to be late (intrans)

Hän myöhästyi koulusta tänään. - He was late to school today. 

3. erottaa - to fire, to break up (trans)

Valitettavasti hänet erotettiin työpaikastaan. - Unfortunately hän was fired from his work place.

4. epäillä - to suspect (trans)

Minä epäilen häntä vakavasta rikoksesta. 

5. erehtyä - to err, to make a mistake (trans)

Hän erehtyi ovesta ja meni väärään huoneeseen. - He mistook door and went into the wrong room.

6. heijastua - to be reflected (intrans)

Vedestä heijastui hänen oma kuvansa. - His own face was reflected in the water. {His own face was a reflection in the water.}

7. hikoilla - to sweat (intrans)

Hän hikoili jännityksestä. - He was sweating from excitement/nervousness. 

8. huolehtia - to take care of 

Sinä huolehdit minusta hyvin. - You took care of me well. 

9. ilahtua - to become happy/delighted (intrans)

Ilahduin lahjasta. - I was delighted with the present. (I become happy from the present).

10. irrota - to come off, to come loose (intrans)

Takista irtosi nappi. - A button came loose from the coat.  

11. johtua - to stem from, to originate from (intrans)

Tämä päätös johtui siitä, että hän ei ollut valmis valmistua nyt. - This decision stems from the fact that she/he was not ready to graduate now. 

12. jutella - to chat

Hän ei jutellut tästä minun kanssa ollenkaan. - He didn’t chat with me about that at all. 

13. kadehtia - to be jealous of, to envy (someone) {huom: person you are jealous of is in partitive!}

Minä kadehdin häntä lottovoitosta. - I was jealous of her due to the lotto win.

14. selvitä - to survive, to get through

Sinä selviät tästä. - You will get through this. 

15. tarjota - to offer

Tarjosin talosta puoli miljoonaa. - I offered half a milloin for the house. 

16. päästää irti - to let out

Hän päästi irti minusta.- He let go of me.

Examples

Hän sai potkut sairaalasta. - He got fired from the hospital. 

Sinä saat kenkää, jos sinä et ole varovainen. - You will get fired, if you are not careful.

Hän aikoo erottaa monia ihmisiä firmastaan. - He intends to dismiss many people from his firm.

Nyt minä haluan erota töistä. - Now I want to resign from work.
