REM(Rapid Eye Movement): Stage Of Sleep Cycle
Now a days most of the people are suffering from many sleep related issues, which effects to their physical and mental health. We have read about many sleep disorders which make you sleep deprived through out night. But today in this article we’re going to know about the REM sleep disorder which effects on you during deep sleep. It sounds strange but it is true. Let’s see how is it possible?
REM Sleep Stage
REM( Rapid eye movement) is a stage of sleep that most people experience at night. It considers as a part of sleep cycle which consists of 5 phases and your brain cycles through these distinct stages during sleep. The amount of time spent in REM stage is about 25% of your sleep cycle that lasts for 70 to 90 minutes after you fall asleep. You may enter many times in this stage while sleeping. It is characterized by quick and random movement of eyes in which your muscles get paralyzed. REM sleep cycle is stage where dreaming session and deep sleep occurs.
REM SLEEP BEHAVIOR DISORDER
REM sleep behavior disorder is a kind parasomnias disorders, in which some people experience undesired events while sleeping and behave in a strange manner.In Rapid eye movement behavior disorder, people most often face the dreams which are filled with actions, sometimes they may be violent. Abnormal behavior is seen like- shouting, screaming, grabbing, kicking, etc.. and these actions are occurs due to REM sleep disorders such as Sleep walking, sleep talking and night terrors. REM sleep disorder cause the sleeper to feel sleepy and drowsy during the day.. It also leads to many other sleep disorders like sleep apnea, Narcolepsy and Periodic limbs movement disorder.
Syndromes
Person with REM sleep disorder often behave in an abnormal manner, for example he/she may kick, jump, flail, shout or screaming, and leap out of bed while sleeping.
He/she may perform those activities which he is watching in his dreams, for example-If a person is playing cricket in his dream, he tries to catch the ball. His action while sleeping clearly depicts what he wants to do.
Sometimes RED patient’s behavior and actions suddenly hearts his bed partner too.
REM Sleep disorder most often occurs in men as compare to women, it can be appears in any age but most often in old age. It can be found in people who are neurological disorders.
Diagnosis of this disorder
The Diagnosis of this sleep disorder can be done by doctors consultation, in which your doctor will ask you about your medical history and family background because REM sleep disorder can be caused due to genetic problem also. Your doctor should do full examination which includes neurological exam. Your doctor may suggest you to fill sleep diary, this will help the doctor to evaluate the level of your sleep disorder or progress report after treatment.
How to fix this issue
There is need to take safety precautions like move those objects from the patient’s bed side that can heats him.
Avoiding sleeping at the day time, as if you take your sleep or nap during the day time then you won’t able to sleep at the night. So, it leads you to face sleep deprivation problem as a result which increase RED.
Avoid the consumption of alcohol as it raise the symptoms of RED.
Try to more indulge in day time activities, which makes your body active through out the day and at night make you feel tired so that you can sleep easily.
There is need to be treat other sleep related disorders that disturbs your sleep and cause you to face REM sleep disorder.
