Christopher Lee and Sotiria Bellou, the emblematic Greek rebetiko singer in the 80s. 

Fun fact: Lee had met Bellou during his vacation in Greece in the late 80s. Lee described himself as a fan; he was a collector of her 50s recordings and he told her her voice reminded him of Billy Holiday. Naturally, Bellou took a liking to him. When a journalist visited her at her house for an interview, he was startled by a frame of Lee as Count Dracula hanging on the wall. This is how Bellou told him and we know about their encounter and mutual appreciation.  

We all know Christopher Lee but here’s a song with the unique voice of Sotiria Bellou from 1951, so he definitely knew this song and probably loved it :) 

This is rare footage from a live in 1972. The man with the mustache playing the bouzouki, Vassilis Tsitsanis, is also the composer of the song and extremely prominent in Greece’s music history.

"Rebetiko" Art Exhibition in Athens

Rebetiko is the urban popular Greek music of the poorest classes of the first half of the 20th century. As of December 2017, it is inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, created by UNESCO to help demonstrate the diversity and importance of this heritage.

The art exhibition Rebetiko, organised by the Culture, Sports & Youth Organisation of the City of Athens (OPANDA), aims at visualising the essence and iconography of rebetiko music, through 125 works by 50 modern and contemporary Greek artists, including Yannis Tsarouchis, Tassos and Alekos Fassianos. The exhibition will be hosted in three venues from 10 February to 3 April 2022.

Trio Tekke - Strovilos - Greek rembetiko originals in rock band format

Strovilos is a whirlwind. By definition, the Greek word is used to describe a ‘twister’ or whirlwind, but it also takes on the non-literal sense of something unsettled, shifting, a restless person, being airborne. There is darkness and light in this music. Rembetiko was music that carried suffering and also abandon from the worries of life. There is joy in letting go and watching the world spin itself into frenzied chaos. There is pain in being thrown up in this whirlwind, with no control of our destiny. There is tragedy in the never-ending cycle of creation and destruction we endure. There is comedy in the futility of our efforts to hold back the tides. In Strovilos we can embrace the shadows and rejoice in the glow and let the winds decide for us. Undoubtedly their most ambitious album to date, Strovilos sees Trio Tekke continue to re-invent Greek rembetiko in their own pioneering way. With the help of drummer Dave De Rose and other guest musicians including rembetiko guitar maestro Dimitris Mystakidis, the bands compositions are elevated to new heights in this 4th chapter of their musical odyssey.
