being  born  undeniably  beautiful  had  so  many  advantages  for  a  woman.  they  could  get  away  with  anything  as  long  as  they  flashed  their  beauty  to  people,  and  one  of  these  people  was  junko.  from  birth,  people  always  told  her  that  she  was  beautiful,  and  that  was  how  she  got  to  choose  her  husband  from  all  the  candidates.  so  one  day,  when  he  went  to  war,  junko  felt  lonely  and  decided  to  visit  bars  and  clubs  to  find  someone  to  be  with  for  the  time  being.  coming  back  from  the  war,  her  husband  got  wasted  with  his  friends,  and  they  led  him  to  a  club  where  the  most  beautiful  woman  resided,  but  as  they  got  closer,  he  noticed  that  the  door  and  house  looked  exactly  like  his  house.  after  entering  the  house,  he  realised  his  wife  was  cheating  on  him,  throwing  a  tantrum  about  how  he  "  worked  hard  only  to  be  greeted  with  this  ".  his  anger  didn't  stop  there,  as  he  had  grasped  his  katana  and  pulled  it  out.  grabbing  junko's  face,  he  brought  the  blade  closer  to  her  cheeks  and  made  deep  cuts  into  them,  ruining  her  perfectly  blushed  cheeks  and  her  red  plumpy  lips  instead  of  leaving  behind  an  ugly  scar  she  had  to  carry  with  her  for  the  rest  of  her  life.  

from  then  on,  she  started  wearing  a  surgical  mask,  covering  her  disgusting  scars,  as  she  didn't  want  anyone  to  look  at  her  and  call  her  something  other  than  beautiful.  junko  acted  like  being  considered  "ugly"  was  a  crime  since  all  she  ever  heard  her  whole  life  was  "  you  are  so  beautiful  ",  "  wow,  i  love  the  way  your  face  looks  with  this  and  that  ",  and  "  it  would  be  a  shame  if  that  pretty  face  got  hurt  or  scarred  ".  so,  of  course,  she  thought  everyone  would  laugh  at  her  face  and  talk  behind  her  back  about  her  looks.  ridding  herself  of  everything  that  she  had  known,  she  moved  places  a  lot  but  never  took  her  mask  off.  one  night;  she  walked  alongside  a  road  where  children  would  usually  walk  to  and  from  school  and  decided  to  try  something  out.  junko  spotted  a  kid,  less  than  ten  years  old,  and  walked  towards  them.  she  pulled  down  her  surgical  mask  and  asked  them  a  question  she  deemed  important,  "  do  you  think  i'm  pretty  ?  "  she  stared  at  them  with  stars  in  her  eyes,  only  to  have  them  dulled  by  their  ruthless  response;  "  ew,  no,  freak  !  "  the  child  proceeded  to  run  away  from  her  with  tears  in  their  eyes.  junko  couldn't  believe  them;  they  called  her  ugly!  she  then  pulled  her  mask  back  up,  covering  her  mouth  and  walked  away  from  the  place. 

after  a  few  days—  or  was  it  weeks?—  she  didn't  know,  for  she  had  been  cooped  up  in  her  house  since  that  day.  that  one  thing  a  kid  said  bothered  her  for  so  long  and  always  repeated  in  her  mind,  telling  her  that  she  was  ugly  and  unworthy  of  being  one  of  the  most  beautiful  women.  from  that  day  on,  junko  decided  to  have  her  way  with  people  who  called  her  names,  good  and  bad  ones.  going  to  great  limits  to  doll  herself  up  was  unnecessary  for  junko  because  no  amount  of  make-up  would  cover  those  gaping  holes  that  stretched  across  her  cheeks,  not  even  being  symmetrical.  putting  on  a  brown  trench  coat  and  surgical  mask,  junko  walked  out  of  her  home  with  some  scissors  in  hand.  since  people  with  masks  on  are  normal  worldwide,  no  one  was  suspicious  of  her  fashion,  instead  just  thinking  she  was  going  to  the  convenience  store  to  get  medicine.  

but  they  couldn't  be  more  wrong  about  that,  as  junko  was  walking  by  some  schools  instead.  she  saw  the  same  kid  who  called  her  a  freak  and  ran  away  after  seeing  her,  so  she  decided  to  revisit  them.  walking  up  to  them,  she  asked  the  kid,  "  do  you  remember  me  ?  "  they  shook  their  head,  and  she  pulled  down  her  mask.  "  what  about  now  ?  "  her  lips  turned  upwards,  eyes  widened  in  glee  as  the  kid  trembled  in  their  spot.  "  so,  do  you  think  i'm  pretty  ?  "  her  question  seemed  to  terrify  the  kid.  they  managed  to  answer  with  a  small  "  y-yes.  "  junko's  face  got  closer,  and  her  smile  widened,  making  her  cheeks  stretch  farther,  and  the  holes  in  them  got  pulled  open.  the  scene  was  terrifying,  as  you  could  see  inside  her  mouth  without  it  being  open.  "  am  i  still  pretty,  now  ?  "  there  was  no  one  else  in  that  alleyway,  and  the  kid's  tears  were  begging  to  spill  over  their  lash  line  as  they  struggled  to  answer  a  simple  question  asked  by  a  regular  person.  yet,  this  person  wasn't  a  regular  human—  they  were  something  even  worse,  something  no  one  could  explain  but  herself.  that  day  changed  the  kid's  life  forever;  after  having  to  answer  two  [  2  ]  seemingly  small  questions,  they  answered  all  of  them  with  a  tiny  "  yes,  "  but  no  matter  what  they  answered,  she  wouldn't  let  them  go  so  easily.  

after  the  kid  arrived  at  their  home,  they  noticed  someone  near  their  mailbox.  the  person  was  wearing  a  trench  coat,  with  a  mask  and  holding  some  scissors—  'oh  no!  this  was  her  again'—  junko  was  right  in  front  of  their  home  with  big,  big  scissors.  noticing  the  kid  and  walking  towards  them  again,  she  brought  her  hand  towards  their  face  and  grabbed  their  chin,  bringing  it  closer  to  her  scissors,  "  didn't  you  say  that  i  was  a  freak  the  first  time  i  asked  you  !?  what  do  you  mean  'yes'  when  you  really  meant  to  say  'no'  !?  "  she  angrily  exclaimed  to  no  one  in  particular,  and  brought  the  scissors  to  the  kid's  cheeks,  putting  them  in  their  mouth  just  where  the  cheeks'  skin  is,  saying  "  now  you'll  know  what  it  feels  like  to  be  me  !  "  she  closed  the  scissor  blades,  making  the  same  horrifying  cuts  like  the  ones  on  her  cheeks.  after  that,  junko  became  hysterical  when  asking  about  her  appearance,  looking  for  victims  who  would  fall  for  her  tricks;  her  usual  clothing  included  a  trench  coat,  surgical  mask  and  big  sharp  scissors,  which  always  added  to  her  creepiness.  people  that  knew  of  her  began  to  look  like  her,  and  she  had  done  the  same  thing  to  them  that  had  been  done  to  her.  she  ended  up  being  branded  as  the  slit-mouthed  woman  or  kuchisake-onna  [  口裂け女  ].  it  made  the  people  decide  to  stray  away  from  having  trench  coats  not  to  be  mistaken  for  her.  ignoring  her  would  be  the  best  way  to  escape  her  questionnaire,  but  it  still  doesn't  work,  as  she  is  persistent.

since  she  was  young,  acting  was  dee's  specialty,  training  and  practising  her  facial  expressions,  but  her  bipolar  personality  made  it  hard  for  her.  even  now,  it's  making  her  life  hard,  as  she  continues  to  act  as  normal,  pretending  that  she  doesn't  take  the  lives  of  innocent  people  in  her  free  time.  when  dee  first  got  accepted  to  act  in  the  biggest  movie  as  the  female  lead.  she  knew  this  was  the  best  thing  to  happen  in  her  life  because  dee  always  wanted  to  star  in  a  big  movie.  she  went  into  practice  mode  inside  her  basement  and  grabbed  some  pliers.  coming  closer  to  the  body  tied  onto  the  chair,  she  started  plucking  the  person's  fingernails  off  their  fingers,  listening  to  their  blood-curdling  screams,  trying  to  contain  the  happiness  she  continued  with  her  "practice".  

after  an  hour  of  being  down  in  the  basement,  dee  finally  came  back  to  find  her  friend  at  her  door,  so  she  quickly  ran  to  hide  the  basement  door  hatch.  letting  her  friend  inside  the  house,  dee  was  surprised  to  see  her  at  this  hour,  learning  that  her  friend  only  wanted  to  check  on  her.  she  invited  her  friend  for  tea  and  started  chatting  about  their  lives.  after  about  two  [  2  ]  hours,  her  friend  decided  to  leave,  letting  dee  get  some  good  sleep,  as  she  had  to  get  up  early  to  film.  the  filming  went  well  as  dee  had  complete  control  over  her  emotions  and  facial  expressions,  making  the  directors  proud  for  choosing  her  as  the  female  lead.  she  celebrated  a  good  day  of  filming  by  going  to  a  bar  with  her  best  friend,  drinking  'till  the  sun  came  up.  her  friend  asked  her  how  she  had  complete  control  over  herself  whenever  she  needed  to,  so  dee  being  under  the  influence,  decided  to  show  her  how  she  practised  her  acting.  shuffling  over  to  dee's  car,  she  got  in  the  driver's  seat  and  started  it  up,  ready  to  put  the  address  in  the  gps.  

it  was  somewhere  around  02:00  am,  and  they  were  having  the  time  of  their  lives  just  driving  to  the  girl's  house  until  dee's  different  personality  came  out  and  ruined  the  fun.  she  started  yelling  and  screaming  hysterically,  talking  about  how  she  wanted  to  "  gut  her  friend  and  skin  her  alive  ".  of  course,  that  sobered  her  friend  up,  but  she  just  brushed  it  off  as  dee  being  drunk  and  in  character  as  the  film  she  was  starring  in  was  a  horror  thriller  crime.  coming  to  a  stop  just  in  front  of  the  highway  lane,  the  girl  in  the  driver's  seat  suddenly  turned  around  and  took  something  from  the  back  of  the  car,  her  friend  just  gazing  out  the  window  looking  at  all  the  stars  that  glittered  in  the  night  sky.  not  knowing  what  dee  was  doing,  the  girl  in  question  was  staring  creepily  at  the  back  of  her  friend's  head,  breathing  deeply  down  her  ear.  having  felt  something  near  her  ear,  the  friend  turned  around  only  to  see  dee's  face  so  close  to  hers,  screaming  her  lungs  out  while  the  bipolar  girl  was  hysterically  laughing  and  cackling  at  the  situation.  finally,  grabbing  the  axe  she  was  searching  for  in  the  back  seat,  she  struck  her  friend  on  the  head  with  the  butt  of  the  weapon,  which  caused  her  to  pass  out.  

an  hour  later,  she  woke  up,  feeling  some  rope  around  her  body.  she  looked  around  to  see  that  she  was  in  some  dark  room,  very  damp  as  if  it  was  underneath  a  house.  figuring  out  that  she  was  probably  in  a  basement,  dee's  friend  started  screaming  and  yelling  for  help  to  try  and  see  if  anyone  was  near.  turning  to  the  side,  she  saw  another  person  also  tied  up  like  her,  except  this  person  didn't  have  any  nails  on  their  fingers.  she  got  scared,  even  more,  thinking  she  was  kidnapped  and  couldn't  remember  anything.  hearing  a  noise  in  the  direction  of  the  door,  she  got  excited  that  someone  might've  found  them,  but  it  was  only  dee.  coming  closer  to  her  friend,  dee  leaned  over  her,  whispering  something  to  her,  "  i  told  you  that  i  wanted  to  skin  you  alive  and  gut  you  like  a  pig  !  "  she  let  out  loud  cackles  as  she  brought  out  a  knife,  pressing  it  to  her  friends'  arm.  "  which  part  would  hurt  the  most  ?  huh  !?  "  she  mocked,  "  well,  you  wanted  to  see  how  i  controlled  my  facial  expressions  and  emotions,  didn't  you  ?  "  dee  recalled.  "  i  remember  you  were  asking  me  to  show  you  how  i  practise,  so  i'll  personally  teach  you  !  "  dee  hysterically  laughed  and  gripped  the  girl's  cheeks,  bringing  her  face  closer  as  she  stared  into  her  friend's  eyes.  

no  one  suspected  dee  when  they  found  out  her  friend  was  missing;  the  thought  never  crossed  their  mind  as  dee  was  such  a  famous  person,  who  was  practically  a  saint.  but  she  was  far  from  being  a  saint  once  her  other  personality  came  out  to  play.  going  on  a  killing  spree  and  never  getting  satisfied,  dee  turned  to  dark  magic  and  spirits  to  help  'fix'  herself.  due  to  how  much  she  sinned,  the  price  to  pay  was  so  much  worse  than  she  expected.  turning  into  a  yaksha  [  ยักษ์  ],  dee  hoped  to  get  rid  of  this  double  personality  curse,  but  it  seemed  to  follow  her  everywhere  she  went,  and  she  could  not  escape  it.  now,  being  forced  to  protect  thailand  from  demonic  spirits,  dee  is  condemned  to  wander  alone,  forever.

becoming  a  mother  was  what  francisca's  mother  wanted  for  her  to  be,  so  she  set  her  and  a  guy  on  a  blind  date,  as  it  could  benefit  both  of  them.  after  a  while,  freni  finally  had  a  partner,  and  her  mother  became  a  grandmother  sometime  later.  she  didn't  expect  freni  and  her  partner  to  argue  over  family,  marriage,  and  children.  however  she  tried,  francisca's  mother  couldn't  fix  their  relationship,  so  they  naturally  broke  up.  both  went  on  different  sides  and  walked  down  their  paths.  a  year  later,  francisca  got  a  new  partner,  and  her  mother  thought  this  would  be  her  chance  to  become  a  grandparent,  but  things  soon  went  sideways  when  they  found  out  freni  was  pregnant.  freni  didn't  feel  she  was  ready  for  birth  and  pregnancy,  but  her  mother  calmed  her  down  and  convinced  her  to  get  married  so  the  baby  could  have  a  "perfect"  family.  

her  partner  didn't  like  that  she  was  pregnant  with  their  child  either,  so  they  started  to  drink  their  nights  away,  leaving  freni  alone  in  their  shared  apartment  to  wonder  where  her  partner  was  and  if  they  were  safe.  only  at  rare  times  would  her  partner  come  back  home,  and  they  would  always  be  drunk  to  the  bone,  slurring  their  words  and  wobbling  on  their  feet.  always  demanding  freni  to  'do  this  and  that'  for  them,  the  worst  part  was  that  she  always  listened,  like  a  good  girl.  freni  always  went  along  with  anything,  even  becoming  a  mother  for  the  benefit  of  her  parents.  her  partner  never  wanted  to  be  a  parent  so  early  on  in  their  life,  so  they  would  blame  freni  for  not  being  careful  enough  not  to  get  pregnant,  yelling  at  her  for  not  being  able  to  be  as  skinny  as  the  models  they  see  on  billboards.  although  she  tolerated  this  verbal  abuse,  she  would  always  cry  to  sleep,  only  being  with  her  hateful  thoughts;  she  never  spoke  up  to  anyone,  fearing  that  they  might  agree  with  her  partner  and  start  hating  her.  

the  abuse  only  got  worse  and  worse  as  time  went  on;  her  baby  bump  got  more  visible  and  noticeable,  which  annoyed  her  partner,  making  them  drink  even  more  than  they  used  to.  this  time  it  wasn't  only  verbal  abuse  directed  toward  her;  it  got  to  the  point  where  her  partner  was  so  enraged  with  her  situation  that  they  started  throwing  plates,  vases,  glasses  and  even  chairs.  sometimes  the  glass  would  shatter  and  go  in  her  direction,  making  her  cover  herself.  one  day  was  enough  for  them  to  push  them  over  the  edge,  and  once  it  did,  they  started  abusing  and  beating  freni,  even  going  as  far  as  hitting  her  in  the  stomach,  which  caused  tremendous  pain  to  go  through  her  and  made  her  have  a  miscarriage,  thus  losing  the  only  thing  that  was  good  in  her  life.

you  could  only  imagine  the  horror  he  felt  after  seeing  her  bloody  and  broken  face,  blood  running  down  her  face,  her  makeup  ruined,  and  her  eyes,  oh  those  eyes  the  driver  would  never  forget,  were  bloodshot  and  red  from  all  the  tears  that  flowed  from  her.  suddenly  getting  an  urge  to  wrap  her  arms  around  the  driver's  neck,  she  jumped  onto  them  and  started  strangling  them,  ruthlessly  digging  her  nails  deeper  into  their  skin,  drawing  the  blood  from  the  veins  in  their  neck.  making  the  car  swerve  and  hit  a  tree  deep  in  the  forest,  where  no  one  could  see,  marie  finally  realised  what  she  was  doing  and  let  go,  but  it  was  a  little  too  late,  as  the  driver  was  already  dead.  leaving  the  vehicle  and  hiking  the  forest,  marie  went  back  onto  the  main  road  and  waited  for  another  taxi  to  notice  her.  it  wasn't  hard  to  see  her  from  afar,  as  she  still  had  her  sparkly  but  ripped  wedding  dress  on,  the  dirt  from  her  legs  and  feet  dirtying  the  ripped  ends  of  the  fabric  and  thread.  marie  knew  she  had  to  find  her  killers  and  avenge  herself  for  what  they  had  done  to  her.  years  and  decades  passed,  and  she  was  still  unable  to  find  the  accused.  she  took  on  a  different  persona,  but  she  was  also  dubbed  the  kaperosa  or  white  lady.
