It's about time we get around to actually thinking critically about posts you reblog. As far as I'm concerned, anyone posting about how "bad" Biden is is one of them. They did this in 2016 as well, and successfully got hordes of suckers voters to write in 3rd party candidates like Bernie and fucking Harambe.

Remember how bad 4 years of Trump were? How about another, potentially endless term? One where he makes good on his promise to become a dictator? Where women and trans people have no control over their bodies, where loving who you want to love is illegal, where escape from an abusive spouse is a pipe dream, civil rights are a long lost memory and where Russia (and others) get to wipe out entire populations with impunity, emboldened by an Autocratic USA.

Think about all of this before deciding to give credence to the idea of sitting out this year. Because that's what we get if voters fuck around like they did in 2016.

So this is awkward

For some reason some Jake Gyllenhaal fan accounts on Instagram saw absolutely zero problem with posting this photo - not for commentary, not for debate, but just because hey! Anything goes! - and this wasn’t just years ago. It was three days ago. When three days ago, we knew exactly what this photo was. Caption contest?

In case you didn’t know who Jakey-Jakes was pointing to with pride, it’s Harvey Weinstein. You may know Harvey Weinstein for being in prison for raping and assaulting over 80 women over the course of two decades (there are likely, likely more) and terrorizing women in the industry, no matter how young they were. When I say terrorizing, I mean destruction if they didn’t agree to grant him sexual favors.

This photo was taken in June 2016 at the Tony Awards. A year later, the New York Times would publish the exposé on Weinstein that started the entire criminal investigation.

Weinstein’s horrific behavior and path of destruction was a well-known, well-documented secret in Hollywood, according to Ronan Farrow, who won the Pulitzer Prize for exposing Weinstein, a watershed that created the #MeToo movement. This is just a handful of people who knew, and have done nothing. Because “being sleazy and a creep is not uncommon”, according to sleaze Ben Affleck.

Not only people posing with Weinstein knew exactly who he was, if I was a publicist, I would have been in a rush since 2017 to scrub the internet of every photo my client could be in, but that’s just me. Really really confused as to why people think it’s okay if they appreciate the man to share this photo.

It’s October 1 and I’m so happy. 

Part of me, though, remembers how immensely sad I felt at this point last year. 

I’m sitting on my couch in my one bedroom apartment in Austin, listening to Rainbow Kitten Surprise. I love this band but listening to it feels like putting on a pair of sunglasses in a dark room. My vision clouds and greys. I smell my room in Flogsta, stained with communal living and decades of visitors. I taste Ouzo, taking six shots in less than an hour. I see Anna straightening her hair while I gulp down Swedish vodka and orange juice, vomiting words into text messages and trying to convince you that I was loveable. I can even picture dancing with Sam, about to blackout, and admitting to him that I was in love with someone thousands of miles away. 

I picture myself lying upside down in bed, my legs propped up on the wall. Listening to “American Shoes” and just allowing myself to feel. I felt so much last October, and not a lot of it was happy. 

So I love this band, but I think I ruined my experience with them. I hope I learn to listen to them and not feel sick.
