Price tags, and fair market prices

Price tags, and fair market prices themselves, are increasingly a thing of the past. These days, you’re not seeing “the” price—you’re seeing “your price.”

Before the fixed price became a retail standard in 1861, shopping was an exercise in discrimination where your identity often dictated your cost of living.

Today, the protection of fixed prices is being quietly dismantled.

Whether it’s grocery chains replacing paper with electronic labels linked to AI, or ride-share companies tracking your battery life—while acknowledging that someone with 1% phone battery is statistically more likely to accept a surge price—the goal is the same: identifying your individual pain point.

This logic doesn’t end with consumer goods: legal scholar Veena Dubal’s research shows how Uber, for example, is using algorithms to individualize pay, providing more or less return for the same workload and performance, based on the lowest amount a driver will accept.

The next time you see a price on a screen, it’s worth reflecting on whether you’re looking at the value of the product, or the value an algorithm assigned to you.

You’ll never hear me say Im a fan of Lena dunham, eventho I liked the first season of girls, (but I was over it once hannah shoved a qtip in her ear lol) but anyway she was recently a guest in the criterion closet and boy oh boy I didn’t realize the vitriol she would get from that crowd… from the criterion crowd!… I mean yea she put on a lot of weight, but whatever, shit happens who cares what the fuck she does… I was not expecting the comments from the criterion video viewers to go that hard against her. It was vicious. Made me empathize with her a little, cause it was clear a lot of the fat comments were really about her being a ‘feminist’ and ‘woke’ and boy oh boy I just didn’t think that kind of 4chan rot bled into what I consider to be a fairly progressive sorta place… I mean you just don’t see right wingers talking about how much they love Bergman or Kurosawa lol… why are they there? but it was nasty, and I guess I wasn’t expecting such a tidal wave of those comments. Like i get it she’s a divisive person, who’s put her foot in her mouth many times, and then published that book where she said she did some weird gross shit to her sister or whatever, and man they kept bringing that up too… like every other comment. But mostly it was about her weight… it was just overwhelming. Then there was another video with Ronan farrow that just came out, which maybe wasn’t as vicious but the same kinda fuckin bullshit against him too… like every other comment was about woody allen or Polanski and how Frank Sinatra might be his dad, and it’s like didn’t you see the 10 other comments that said the exact same thing? Why are you bothering. And it’s like the incentive structure of YouTube is that they’re not gonna weed those comments out cause all that trash and garbage engagement is good for their algorithm, so you benefit from people doing and saying all that shit. It’s honestly so fuckin awful, all of it. At this point I’ll be happy if YouTube makes it so I can’t watch one of their fucking videos anymore unless I give them my personal identification… there’ll be no better reason to finally stop giving them the engagement they want. Fuck YouTube.
