"Homer Price"

This past weekend we went home to visit my parents and ended up talking to my mother about the doughnut book she read to us when were we little taking car trips. She could only remember that it started with Homer and had no idea who the author was, so I decided to go home and do some research for it. Got home and promptly forgot everything about it. Fast forward a couple of days I'm at work in the school library pulling books to be relabeled. I pull out this pink book, which is the very cover I remember it having as a child, and there is "Home Price" eating a doughnut on the cover written by Robert McCloskey. My excitement is truly unknown at this point, I think I might have started hyperventilating, but I was alone in the library and have no idea if I was or not. Then I checked the book in the system and was disappointed to see that no one had bother to check the book out in 8 years, and that it should probably in all honesty be weeded from the library. Instead I checked it out, brought it home to read, and was ever so grateful that I did.

This book was originally written in 1943, and even though our version is a reprint from the 1971, purchased in 2005, the illustrations haven't changed, the cover hasn't changed, and I think that is something that is beautiful. Now I know, just a quick Amazon search, shows that there is at least one other cover for "Homer Price" but the illustrations haven't changed. It's so awesome to look at this book and realize that in 71 years, no one has tried to change it or update it, and that's one thing that is constantly happening with books. People want the books to sell, and so there are 30+ covers for it, and once it's been so many years they update the illustrations for it. Look at any of Beverly Cleary books and you'll know what I mean. In order to have them remain popular they revamped them to make them appealing to the newest generation. Which is fine, but Homer Price's charm is in his old fashion look.

What's great about this book, is that having a historical background, I get to see the relevant points of culture that a lot of people probably wouldn't find as fascinating. Like the robbers in the first chapter who wear the eye masks and bandannas, or the movie that see is the first installation and they have to go back next Saturday to see the conclusion, or how his Uncle Ulysses is about automation and helps set up a cookie cutter suburb that in just another 7 years from when this book was written would be the highlight of modern times. There are so many wonderful things about this book and it just pleases me to reread it and understand so much more of it as an adult. It's also witty and full of colorful characters that make the book so enjoyable.

Now the goal is to go back to work on Monday and try to talk the third grade teachers into promoting it to students because it is a wonderful book I think a lot of them would enjoy.
