Remember Maryam Khatoon Molkara, Iranian trans activist (1950-2012). In 1978 (!!!) she basically walked straight into the Ayatollah Khomeini’s compound in Tehran to petition him for a fatwa, or religious order, allowing trans Iranians to obtain gender-confirming surgeries. Maryam was beaten by bodyguards before coming face-to-face with the Ayatollah in his living room, covered in blood - but she pled her case, and got the letter. Gender-related surgeries have been legal in Iran ever since.
