Sheffield Hero Tony Foulds recieved the original bronze resin cast of my Airmen tribute plaque last week. I'm glad he likes it. His son took the photo and shared it with me. I was inspired to make the sculpture after hearing Tonys story on BBC Breakfast, with Dan Walker and Louise Minchin, while having breakfast with my Wife and Son. For those who didnt catch the story, Tony was an 8 year old schoolboy in 1944 and on February the 22nd, was playing in a local park with other children when a severely damaged B17 Flying Fortress Americian Airforce airplane, called Mi Amigo, appeared above the roof tops and made as if to land in the Park but pulled up when the Pilot saw the children. The plane crashed just beyond the park and everyone on board died. 75 years later in 2019, Tony is still tending to their memorial in the woods. This lifetime of dedication just blew me away. When the American Ambassador to the UK added that over 400 Allied Airmen lost their lives on that day I was dumbfounded. I couldnt help but think of all the families recieving that bad news. Thats when I decided to make something to try and honour their sacrifice and memory. From some of the feedback I've recieved from those who have seen it, it seems as if I've hit the right note. #theairmen #miamigo #rememberthe10 #sculpture #basrelief #bronzeresin #flyingfortress #b17 #305th #usairforce #airforce #tonygotaflypast #usambassadortotheuk #bbcbreakfast #encliffepark #ww2 #airplane #men #flying #clouds #wallhanging #handmade #homemade #commercialsculptor #mould #cast #resin #bronze https://www.instagram.com/p/BwtwAeJFNc8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=112ycrndtps4g
