Short piece of writing I did a few months ago as a part of Remus’s backstory. Told in second person, lightly disturbing

Informally titled, “Remus Ate A Dead Bird When He Was A Kid.”

You are young. You might’ve been around 10 years old. You might’ve been 8. You can’t really remember. It is very sunny in the garden, and there are many plants and trees that look so pretty in the mid morning light. You aren’t supposed to be there. It’s not that there’s anything secret. It’s just that little girls who burn easily in the sun aren’t supposed to be outside for very long, and certainly not without supervision.

You aren’t a little girl. You don’t know what you are. But you know that something like you shouldn’t have to follow their rules.

You are crouched down, staring at a bird. It had been behind a plant. It’s small, and it had a little broken wing. It was still, and it was twisted and it didn’t look right. It was dead.

And it was sort of beautiful. Pretty feathers and delicate bone snapped from it. You didn’t see any blood.

You have been crouched down staring at this bird for several minutes.

And you are drawn to it.

You want to pick it up in your hands and look at it closely. You do.

You stare at it with dirtied fingers in your little child-thing hands.

You gently grip the wing and slowly tear it off of the little body.

There’s some wet sounding noises and a crack. You probably damaged something in it.

It’s red. There’s stuff inside it.

You feel hungry.

You open where you ripped it a little more with your fingers. You want to see what’s inside. It’s sticky. It’s sort of the same temperature as the air. It’s cold, maybe. And squishy.

You have a sudden, extremely strong urge to put that bird in your mouth and crunch it in your teeth. You think it would be like eating quail. You like quail. You like how it feels to eat quail.

It briefly occurs to you that your parents would be mad.

You do it anyway.

It doesn’t taste like quail. The feathers get in your mouth, and they crunch along with bone, and it’s only squishy besides things that poke. It’s sour, it’s squishy, it’s gross and it pokes. It’s so strange. Theres a taste under the sour. Something you haven’t had before, but it tastes familiar, and not at the same time.

You don’t spit it out.

You have another bite.

You keep eating the bird.

You didn’t get very dirty. You could wash off your face and hands in the bird fountain.

All you got was a lecture about being in the garden.

You got very very sick for the next week, the sickest you’ve ever been.

You never tell anyone why. It’s your secret.

It makes complete sense as to why you ate that bird.

Even though you probably won’t ever again.

You almost didn’t feel anything about it at all. Almost.

It felt good.

And it made you feel very alive.

The more I write Remus hitting rock bottom the more it’s clear I’m making him a System of some kind but he doesn’t know that. Which makes all of this way funnier. 250ish years old and he still doesn’t know there are guys in his head bc the communication is just that bad
