I’ve been interested in reading the author’s debut work Tobakushi wa Inoranai for a while now as I’ve heard many good things about it but haven’t gotten around to it so, when I saw that the author had a new series coming out, I decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, the pacing and the writing style didn’t work for me but I did find the story and characters interesting and I will be reading the next volume. People who want to read a romance story about the complicated relationship of a human and a vampire should enjoy this.

Story:

Seymour is a smuggler. One day, he meets Lumi, a vampire who claims to have nowhere to go. He offers her to stay at his house and, in exchange, she cooks his meals for him. Of course, things are not always as they seem as Seymour discovers Lumi’s secret.

I really didn’t like the pacing in this one. It was weird in that it was both too fast and too slow. Too fast in that it felt like there wasn’t much to let the plot breathe and there weren’t a whole lot of nice, easy, character-focused scenes to help move the plot along. And it was slow in that so many scenes just felt like they took ages to read and were way too long. This volume definitely did not need to be 340 pages long and cutting down on the narration would have really helped with the pacing. And that’s my other big issue with the volume: the narration. There’s way too much of it and it describes all the emotions in the scene in a way that makes you feel like the author doesn’t trust their readers to come to those conclusions on their own. A writer needs to trust their readers and it feels like Ren Sudou doesn’t.

But the story was very interesting and the relationship between the two leads is compelling. They have a very interesting and complex relationship that you don’t often see in light novels and that really helps it set itself apart from other romance stories. I also really liked the climax and ending of the volume and I’m very excited to read the next one.

Characters:

Seymour and Lumi are both good leads and they have a compelling relationship that propels the narrative forward. Their not particularly likeable people but I think that just makes them all the more interesting. Unfortunately, the side characters aren’t nearly as strong and end up being unmemorable, with a few exceptions. Hopefully the next volume will start to build them up more.

Recommended for:

If you like stories centered on vampires, then you’ll probably like this. It doesn’t really play around with the concept as much as something like Vamp does but, if you just like vampires, you should have fun with this. Fans of romance, especially fans of complicated and adult romance, should enjoy this as well as fans of stories with a Western setting.

According to the end of the volume, the next volume is going to becoming out early next year. I look forward to seeing the continuation of the story. Next up is Danmachi Sword Oratoria 1.
