I do quite like this song. It’s the right mix of desperation and attempted coaxing. I found out about Caligula when it was about to be released in Japan (2016 or so) and I’ve stumbled upon it again… it seems rather interesting. (+ the art and OST are gorgeous!!)

[caligula spoiler] the song is essentially about μ (voiced by the lovely rena ueda), some idol chick that governs over this world called Mobius, convincing the player (who is aware that Mobius is a world of false illusions, and wants to return to the real world) to remain, with temptations of eternal happiness and whatnot. through the song, we can see that μ knows how wretched Mobius in itself is, but coaxes the player into staying anyway. quite a fun song to translate, too. the “boku ga boku no… kimi e kimi wo” really grinded my gears because there’s close to zero accurate english translation for japanese particles, aargh. regardless, i hope you enjoy.

Notes:

*Spoiler alert: I’ll try not to spoil the game, but please be careful while reading those notes*

- Where do I begin? This song is from a PS Vita game, “The Caligula Effect”. You control a group of highschool student trapped in a virtual world, Mobius ran by a Vocaloid-like entity called µ (Mu, just like µ’s from Love Live). Her goal is to let people repeat their highschool years peacefully, away from their real world problems. Thing is, most of the people in this world believe this is the real world, which is the whole point of the whole “peaceful virtual world” thing, but the hero and his friends are not happy about this “fake happiness”. I won’t go into details, but the game gives some mad Persona 3 and4 vibes, check it out if my bad synopsis somehow hooked you.

- There’s are some wordplays, kanji with completely different pronunciations, etc... that I feel I should note:

* The two stanzas starting with “ キミヘノ愛ノ” are really interesting. The first and third lines are almost identic in japanese, except for the last word. The first one has 感情, which means “feelings, emotions”, while the second one has 衝動, “urge, impulse”. I tried to convey it by choosing stronger, more violent feelings in the second one. The 変えがたい/耐えがたい (irreplaceable/unbearable) opposition was nice too. I wasn’t able to translate it well enough, but the two sentances are really similar in japanese.

* The “My peaceful everyday is crumbling away” is literally worded like that: “the peaceful everyday is being corroded by something”. It’s most likely referring to the protagonists trying to get out of this place.

 * “If you find the end”: The “end” is written in japanese as the “exit”. 

 * “BOKUGABOKUNOBOKUEBOKUOKIMIGAKIMINOKIMIEKIMIO”: It’s, well, garbage. Can’t really translate that.

* Forgot about that one. Some of the “世界” (sekai, world) like in “キミが微笑む世界" (kimi ga hohoemu sekai) is read as “ 箱庭” (hakoniwa), which means “miniature garden”. She’s obviously talking about how Moebius is a fabricated world, specifically made for people to enjoy their lives. * Holy hell how could I miss that one. Well, I know how, I was translating with the song on repeat, so I automatically swapped the written word for the sung ones. So, I’m dumb, in other news:  In the “unsightly state” line, the kanji for state (read as sugata in this song, which means “form, state”) is written 肉袋. These kanji should be read “nikutai” or “nikufukuro”, which means a bag of flesh. It was a bit confusing, so:  Written word: 肉袋, nikutai/nikufukuro, bag of flesh Sung as: 姿, sugata, form/state,
