I feel like Mao proves simple animation and straightforward storytelling without giving everything away is still popular. So much anime today is about being graphically impactful while lacking the ability to hold back on the big reveal and build up the suspense, giving the character arcs time to breathe. Also having too much detail in everything makes it hard to appreciate the characters themselves. Not that I don’t love a purely pretty anime sometimes but Mao being very reminiscent of early 2000s anime is bringing back all those that hold a special place in my heart.

I am so excited about this new Rumic world era!! I’ve read the first few manga volumes and Mao is truly something special I can’t wait to see more!

Yo! How's everything going? Today the first episode of Rumiko Takahashi's MAO aired!

They've also been doing crossover works with all the Rumic work from InuYasha to Yashahime!

I hope you guys enjoy the InuYasha-Yashahime references they've dropped in MAO !

MAO may mostly just be Inuyasha in the 1920's, but I do appreciate that it has the mindfulness to go:
