Lion’s Head renovation update 🔨

This space used to be a dilapidated garage… and now it’s becoming one of the most practical parts of the home.

Outside is coming together beautifully, and inside we’re in the final stretch. Trim is complete, paint is on its last coat, and everything is starting to feel finished. 👌

What was once overlooked is now a clean, functional space with a proper utility room and a layout that truly works for the family.

How about a quick #FunFriday post? . It's been a very long time since I posted anything to do with house renovations, mainly because we just haven't had the time nor energy to do any renovations! However, during the last few weeks of my PhD, the hubby decided it was finally time to tackle the downstairs bathroom. . In the first pic you can see a before and after, and then the next three show the stages in between. Basically we (and I use the term "we" very loosely here...) stripped out the ceiling, which those of you who were around for our last renovations will recognize as those infused with toxic chemicals... We also stripped out the sinks and cupboards, because we didn't need two sinks and the cupboards were way too small to hold all our swimming gear. We didn't want to remove the tiles or go through the whole process of adding new tiles over the top (like we did in the kitchen), so instead we painted those tiles around the shower area, and then covered the rest with this amazing foil that gives the illusion of a brick wall. . Once that was done, the design process could start, which was where I came in! I was keen to try out an industrial-type theme, and we found some great brackets and lights which added just the right aesthetic. We added in a bath instead of a shower, which I'm so happy with because I've been really missing having a bath, and I think it looks awesome. We also replaced the sinks with one smaller sink, and built up some more spacious shelves. . I'm so happy with how it turned out! The floor is still as was, so not the prettiest to look at, but we will deal with that at a later time. It's been a long time since my last post, for which I apologise, but to make it up to you I will show you what I've been so busy with over the weekend by revealing another renovation update! . This was the big job - the one that we left until last because we wanted to make sure that we kind of knew what we were doing before we started it: the kitchen. . This was a proper renovation - we ripped out everything: oven, fridge, floor, walls, sink, cupboards, surfaces. The only thing that was left alone in this room was the ceiling (which is ironic considering that in every other room in the house we had to rip out the toxic wooden panelling!). I've included a little before and after so you can compare. We're still not 100% done, but it's done enough that I am excited enough to share it with you! . To recap: The walls were stripped of wallpaper and wood, replastered and repainted using the same brand of clay paint as in the rest of the house. The lino floor was taken up and replaced by these gorgeous terracotta tiles. The wall tiles were covered by a new later of lovely hand-formed turquoise tiles (they look more grey in the photos for some reason, but in reality they're much greener). We built all of the cupboards and surface frames ourselves, apart from the central island (we didn't want to screw up anything with the oven!) and ordered a brand new big oven, induction stove, and stand-alone extractor hood which I'm so excited to start using after the electrician comes to install all the final connections tomorrow! No more cooking downstairs in the freezing cold basement! . I'll do more little updates as we finalise all the shelves and racks around the walls, but hopefully this can give you a rough idea. I know it's Monday but I just realised that I forgot to post another renovation update this weekend, so here's a little bit of fun to give you a boost this Monday morning! . The kitchen base is finally finished! The new electricity cables have been installed, the walls have been painted, and the tiles laid. Our brand new oven and induction stove are waiting patiently in the stable, and we have all the wood we need to start building the cupboards and shelves. . I'm very happy with the floor, and it definitely created some interesting memories. It took about as long to prepare to lay it as it did to actually lay it. This was mainly because we soon realised that the tile cutter we had to do the wall was not strong enough for the floor tiles. After several broken attempts we decided to see if the local tile shop (where we'd bought them from) was open and could maybe lend us a better tool. Alas they weren't open, but as the hubby drove past on his way to the bigger hardware store in the next town to see if they had anything, he noticed the tile van pulling up outside the shop so quickly pulled over and asked for help. They still weren't officially open, but the guy found a stronger tile cutter and demonstrated how to split one of the tiles he had lying around in the van. However, on returning home, we still couldn't seem to work out how to split them properly, so the hubby ran back down the road to the shop - this time taking one of our tiles as an example. Indeed, these are a bit thicker so a slightly different method was required, and finally after 4 hours of fiddling with other jobs while we worked out what to do with the tiles, we could start laying the floor! . This is a perfect demonstration of one of the advantages of buying from local businesses. If we had ordered these tiles online, who knows how much longer it would have taken us to work out how to split them. As it was, we could just nip down the road for a quick chat, and because we are local, they were happy to lend us whatever tools we needed. . Nearly the end of the weekend, which means it's probably time for another renovation update! . We are finally starting work on the last big job - redoing the kitchen! This is definitely our biggest project yet, because we ripped out everything. We also had to get the electrics completely redone which took a few days of working while listening to drilling, hammering, and swearing electricians! . But now that's all done we can finally start layering! This weekend we put up the new wall tiles. We were originally planning to rip out the old tiles and only do a smaller new section above the sink, but during the toxicity report we were told that the glue was likely based in aspestos... Ah the joys of redoing an old house! So we decided to just cover them instead. . Very excited to get on with painting next week, and looking forward to the floor tiles arriving soon! Time for a renovation update! . It's been a surprisingly stressful week, and so to end the weekend on a nice note we're stuck into our renovations again. Our current focus is the kitchen, which is probably our biggest project as we're pretty much stripping out and replacing everything. . I mentioned it in a previous post, but the archaeology of these renovations it's truly fascinating to me. In the kitchen especially there are four different layers of wallpaper on the main walls, and then behind one wooden-panelled wall we found polystyrene panels, and behind them was yet another layer of wallpaper! It's also interesting to see the writing and origins of the wall boards. . And that's not even mentioning the floors. The top layer of linoleum was easy enough to peel off, and then under that was layer of huge (and very well screwed-in plywood boards, and then under that we found yet more of those real pinewood floors like we found in the upstairs bedrooms! (We've decided that we will cover them with backer boards and terracotta tiles, because wooden floors in the kitchen is always an issue...) . While rummaging to look for house plans, we found the original building plan that the hubby's granddad had made. He built the house back in the 50s as a home for him and his new wife, their future kids, and his parents. Definitely a full house! This meant that there were many more private living areas then there are now, which definitely explains certain layers and why they were covered up when the use of the room changed. . I'm curious what it will be like in 50 years if our grandchildren ever take over this house like we have done. Will they also be saying "why on Earth did they do it this way?!" when ripping out everything? Next room on the verge of being finished: The guest bedroom! . Before picture is a bit cluttered still, as we hadn't yet thrown out half of the furniture, but as you can see it was the toxic wooden ceiling, wallpapered walls, and carpeted floor. . Luckily, unlike in some of the others rooms, the ceiling above the wooden panelling was still in good shape, so we decided to leave it as is and not cover it with new panelling like we did in the living rooms. . Underneath the carpet was that amazing pinewood floor, which I shared earlier, and which has beautiful grains that pop out nicely after applying oil. Now that the walls and ceiling have been painted with the same clay paint as downstairs, all we need are some skirting boards and then we can start having visitors! Yay it's time for another renovation update! . This week we're getting a new heating system, which is very exciting but means that for a few days we're without heating 🥶 and have to wait until the afternoon/evening to do our own renovations. So we haven't finished the living room ceiling yet, but we did build a very cool construction over the weekend. . As you can probably imagine by now, I really love those old houses full of big beams and warped walls. They always feel so warm and cosy. Unfortunately the living room in our new house was pretty plain in terms of structural support, but we had the idea to incorporate a kind of "faux beam" into our new lighting system. The idea was that these new "beams" would be hollow, so cables could be threaded through them and they wouldn't be too heavy, but would still give the illusion of that traditional structure. . I'm extremely pleased with the end result! We stuck with lighter wood, because the ceiling is already pretty low (also why we put the spotlights on the side rather than the bottom of each beam) so we wanted to keep the ceiling as light as possible. Especially because this wood likely will darken over time. . So the next task is to add the rest of the wooden ceiling to the living room (in the same way that we did the dining room). I'm very excited to see the end result!
