To anyone new to paying rent or who just doesn't already do this:
Get a rent folder.
Every time you get a receipt for your payment, put it in the folder. Make sure it has the full date on it.
If there is a separate way to see how much is owed, print that out and add it, too.
If you request maintenance, print that request and add it to the folder.
Anything that leaves a trail between you and your landlord should go in the folder.
If you are lucky, you'll never need to use this folder. But if you do, you'll be glad to have it.
My old complex would suddenly say I missed a month or even multiple months and I had to go in with my paper receipts to show the months they claimed. Usually 3 or more months back.
They also tried to charge for broken appliances we had put in requests for right when we moved in (we lived in that apartment for 4 years with a broken dishwasher, and the apartment above us flooded and broke our fire alarm)
I hope you never need your folder. But please make one
