Who is this Laura
Do we like her
*deep breath* Okay, so...
Laura is a test-tube daughter of Wolverine. (I know the comics say she’s a “clone,” but... no. That’s not how cloning works. You can’t clone someone and have them not only change genders but not even have the same eyes and number of claws? But that’s a different rant.)
Now, after Marvel decided to kill off Wolverine, Laura has stepped into the “Wolverine” name. And I mean... listen, I don’t have a problem with people taking up mantles of fallen heroes. (I mean, Kate-Hawkeye is my favorite! C’mon!) But she did MUCH better when she was X-23 and not trying to BE Logan.
Her X-23 stories were her OWN. A lot of the Laura-as-Wolverine is writing her as a rehashed Logan. They even changed her speaking patterns. (She used to have trouble with contractions and now she’s all growly Wolvie?) I don’t have a problem with shared names, but I do have a problem with not letting your characters be their own people.
Laura was in the “Logan” movie and is very popular right now with moviegoers, but considering how much I love the original Wolverine, it’s really hard to ignore that Laura is getting the shaft because they’re trying to make her him instead of making her LAURA. (This is why Kate works so well. She’s not Clint. She’s NOT. They don’t try to write her as girl-Clint, which is what a lot of the writers for Laura do.)
Part of the problem is that there’s not much of a consensus between the writers on her actual personality? So a lot of her stuff either falls flat or could EASILY be written for Logan and swapped out, and you just don’t want to do that to a character. You CAN’T have your characters be interchangeable. They can’t survive that way and hope to stand up to a longtime comic staple like Wolverine.
Now, having read the issue with her in it, it DOES look like they’re addressing a lot of those issues and trying to give her a softer, funnier Wolverine, and they’ve introduced a little sister sort of dynamic with her fellow clone, Gabby, which I am SUPER digging.
But the truth of the matter is, I like Gabby more than I like Laura. I like Gabby-Laura sisterly affection, but that’s so far the only thing that Laura has going for her, at least from what I’ve seen. Admittedly, I haven’t read all of her stuff because I get so turned off by the lack of originality.
I WANT Laura to succeed, because I want more women in comics. But she needs to do that as her own person. And until we get people writing her that know how to give her a personality that isn’t Logan-lite, that’s not going to happen.
tldr: That’s who Laura is. As for if we like her... well. We don’t HATE her. We just wish she was being used to her full potential instead of as a stand-in for a well-loved Marvel staple.
///end rant
