Stay down.
That had been the order. But Luis would never stay down, if he witnessed something like that. The gun against Leon’s head had triggered the same reflex in him that decades ago had caused Krauser’s knife to fly from his hand.
Now Luis was a trained sharpshooter, support for Leon – and his talent spoke for itself. But he could hardly still his heart at the sight he had just been presented with. This platinum-haired bastard…
Luis was on a ledge several meters above the platform this all happened on. Keeping his distance, as promised. But he caught a glimpse of this man looking up to him. Unnatural eyes. Golden specks in endless pitch darkness. And they were so full of venomous promise.
Several things happen simultaneously. Luis reloads his rifle. Zeno’s body twists itself together in a horrific mending. The construction down there breaks apart and Leon makes a spectacular escape with Grace. Down and under into the depths of this strange bunker full of horrors.
Luis breathes out and stays low, yet with his eyes and crosshairs trained onto Zeno. He considers taking another shot. But it probably is futile – with Zeno’s attention now solely on him. There was a safe distance between them yet – at least Luis hoped. Because he knows he sucked in close combat still. He isn’t Leon.
But now with Leon gone… there is something else that Luis could admit out loud. Maybe it would buy him time, maybe it would buy Leon and Grace time. But hopefully it would help Luis in his own mission.
“You want to release Elpis, right?”, he calls down to the tyrant.
“That makes the two of us.”
