“Free your ass and your mind will Follow” -Artist Unknown, Bronx, NYC So I love art. Like any person who thinks they get art, I read way too deep a meaning from seeing this. It’s an obvious message to anyone struggling with their sexuality. It lets them know that once they embrace who they are, their struggles may disappear. It’s not just graffiti, it’s art, it’s a message, ITS INSPIRATION. It inspires me because I always hated the lack of representation of bisexuality in the media. Street art is a medium to send messages, to evoke thoughts, and generate representation.

So I’ve been battling the flu this week and naturally that means curling up on the couch watching movies a lot. And I watched Smoke Signals, yeah? I hadn’t seen it in a very long time. And fuck is it ever a good movie, but made me remember why it was so long since I saw it. I just relate too much to Victor and it brings up a lot of Complicated Feelings about my own father.

Anyway, I was just thinking about how few well known Indigenous films there are that are just, you know, “feel good” stories. “Coming of age” stories. Comedies. And hell, I can’t even think of a film with native leads in my favourite genres, Sci-fi and Fantasy... 

It just really sucks, you know? Having 0 representation in Hollywood, and I am not even pulling that figure out the ass; the most recent Hollywood Diversity report puts native rep in film at 0.5%, 0.3% for Cable 0.2% for Digital, and 0% in Broadcast TV.

I was in the bookstore in the children's section, and I saw a group of black kids acting out scenes from Black Panther very enthusiastically, and it just really made my day. 💜

To be able to wake up knowing that now little black boys and Girls have real life portrayal of a black Superhero. It’s feels good hearing little black girls saying “ I am Shuri” and little black Boys saying “ I am Tachalla” being an avid Comic book fan since small black panther has always been a hero I respected and appreciated his role in the Marvel Universe but honestly I never thought I was going to be able to see this Hero and everything he represented come to the Big screen. #itsbiggerthanjustthemovie #represntationmatters #whiteisnotthedefault #wakandaforever ✊🏾🙅🏾‍♂️
