Requiem for Romance
In my Modern Love class this afternoon, we discussed how relationships, no matter how intimate, how powerful, how strong they appear, have a sense of fragility to them. There’s the idea that if one or both of the participants aren’t ready or committed, they will find a way to escape the relationship, even if their reasoning is on a subconscious level. The example in class featured two people who had only ever been with each other and realized they believed they had missed out on important experiences, but the interview reminded me a lot of Jonathan Ng’s “Requiem for Romance.” The reasoning behind ending the relationship is different, but it illustrates how much our perceptions affect our feelings toward the relationships we’re in.
