“Hmm?” Tired blue eyes blink, coming back into focus and Sheva’s immediate answer is a yawn while Melody shakes her head. “Nah… despite being exhausted,” but that seemed to be a pretty standard thing for her. Sleep was something she got very little of, thanks to the near constant nightmares. Insomnia didn’t used to be something she suffered from, but it was not a solid part of her life.

“I’m fine,” she told the other woman, even as she closed her eyes just to give her eyes a break. “Shouldn’t you be asleep?”

“Well, I can’t help with yesterday, but I can help with today,” and she set a cup of coffee, just the way he liked it, in front of him. Was it extra large? Yes, because she just had a feeling that this morning was going to call for the extra caffeine.

“Maybe one day they’ll figure out how to get this stuff into an IV,” she joked, taking a sip of her own coffee that definitely looked like it didn’t have two shots of espresso in it. She sighed softly and took a seat across from him, pulling a file to her. “Did you stay up all night on this again?” She assumed he had and couldn’t exactly blame him, but working themselves into an early grave wouldn’t help anyone.

“Leon?” she echoed, ignoring his questions and the way he’d dismissed her own concerns. “You’re the new guy,” she blurted, startled to have run into him. Today was supposed to be his first day. She’d help set up the welcome banner and balloons; they’d all been so excited for him to be joining them. God, this was one hell of a welcome, wasn’t it?

“Melody,” she greeted, still eying his shirt before meeting his gaze. “I’m fine,” she answered finally. Did she have a few cuts, scrapes, and bruises? Absolutely. Had she suffered worst in the past? Yes. In the grand scheme of things she was perfectly fine, but the trauma of all this, if she survived, would live with her forever.

“Lemme take a look at that,” and she indicated the darkest part of his bloodstained shirt. “I was going to school to be a nurse,” she added. She didn’t explain that she had given that up to instead become a cop with the hope of joining STARS.

“No? Seems pretty obvious to me. An asshole with a stereotypical narcissistic personality,” she shrugged, tempting fate with her bold words. Was it stupid to poke an angry tiger? Absolutely. Had Melody ever been any good at keeping herself out of harms way? Nope.

The girl seemed to have a death wish or she simply lacked all sense of self-preservation.

“I don’t want to be here anymore than you want me here, but you can’t do this without me,” she pointed out. “So either you kill me and make all of this way harder on yourself. Or, and this is my favorite option,” she rolled her eyes. “We work together and you can be shitty to me after we’re out of here?”

She was bundled up against the chill in the night air, but also to hide the marks on her skin. Her eyes were dull, fear and uncertainty barely hidden behind them. She opened her mouth to speak, but her voice failed her. 

Dammit.

Carefully, she pulled his hand from her face, hand shaking slightly. It was a wonder she hadn't recoiled from the gentle touch. Swallowing she unwrapped the scarf from her neck, revealing ugly bruises beneath. They were fresh, but left a lot of questions in their wake. She couldn’t look at him. Sure, they’d hooked up a few times, but this would likely bring that to an end. Swallowing, she winced. “My ex… he found me,” she murmured, voice a bit rough. “I… I meant to tell you about him it just… never seemed like a good time.”

It’s terror that brings her back to the waking world, limbs weakly struggling against some unseen force. A voice filters through the panic, but at first it’s unfamiliar. Pain and terror make it hard to focus, but Melody fights to try to regain some semblance of control. There’s that voice again and recognition strikes her like a bullet. “Leon,” and all at once the fight leaves her. She’s safe, at least for the moment.

Blue eyes flutter, but she doesn’t have the energy to keep them open for more than a few seconds. Weakly, a hand shifts to cling to his shirt, fingers slick with blood. She vaguely remembers what happened and wonders if this is what it feels like to be dying. She doesn’t want to die, but she’s glad she isn’t alone.

She snorted and rolled her eyes, a faint smile tugging at her lips. “That’s more effort than I’m willing to put forth,” so maybe she wasn’t anything like the Grinch after all. All that effort to terrorize a town of people? Count her out. She just wanted to avoid all of the “holiday cheer” and just go about her life. It was another overly commercialized holiday that meant very little to her.

Good on the folks that enjoyed it, but she wished people would just leave her out of it. The whole thing stressed her out and that was largely because she was expected to participate in things with coworkers she knew next to nothing about. She didn’t like how this holiday always made her feel obligated to do anything.

“This holiday just isn’t for me…” she shrugged, stretching in her chair. “Halloween is way better.”
