      There was nowhere left to put the ANGER. Packed tightly into the limited space between the flight-suit and her skin. He was not the cause, yet the spitfire burning holes into her tongue reflected in the HATEFUL expression she shot his way. “If I tell you I am fine, then I am FINE.” Fox hated that he was right, almost as much as she hated the tight jaws and red-rimmed eyes of those waiting for PILOTS that would never RETURN. Not for their actions, but for a lack of her own. What if she had thought faster, moved quicker, pulled the trigger a shred of a second sooner -- they would be there. All smiles and elation, celebrating another win rather than the solemn losses. They knew the risks every time they climbed into the cockpit, she tried to remind herself, but that did not make their sacrifices any easier to swallow. The fury was only a front, a veil to conceal the stomach-hollowing GRIEF. Stretching out in an unending wall of darkness, the complete ANGUISH she felt might’ve brought her to her knees had she not used the crutch of wrath. Too tenderhearted for as many losses as they had survived, her walls were cracking. The evidence shining in the tears that filled her down-turned gaze.

      “I don’t know how to CARRY them,” Fox admitted quietly. “I know we cannot save them all, but these lives, Dameron, they’re not just numbers. They’re so HEAVY.” Her shoulders were beginning to break. “ -- Forget it. I’m F I N E."

Two, I should be deeply concerned about where both of our physical wellbeing might be headed. ❞   The pilot’s flown with the Resistance for long enough to understand that when you fight in a war long enough, your mind can wander to some pretty dark places. She’s also flown with them for long enough to know that Poe Dameron is not exactly known for flawlessly executed, meticulously thought out plans. He is, however, known for results -- so even if this is a terrible thought, she’s going to put her trust in him. His horrible ideas have gotten them this far, haven’t they? Gotten him to the position he currently occupies.   ❝ You’ve got my attention. What’s the thought? ❞

It’s her first mission since her injury. The binary that whispered in ear was still overwhelming, but she wanted to help. She wanted to fight! Poe’s words made her hand - not holding the blaster - reach to squeeze him. “I’ve got your back,” she promised. His words meant the world to her. She’d fight with her life to make sure he’s okay.
