Is there a gay number in Chinese/mando? Talking with friends about how Brazil has 24 and mexico has 41 made me realize that I don't know if we have a gay number, which seems unlikely to me, given that theres so much other stuff based around number homophones/numerology

I can only speak for Mandarin Chinese but:

1(yī) and 0 (líng) = slang for top/bottom (0.5 would be vers but that's getting into the weeds a bit).

So 0 would be the gay(er) number, I guess, but calling someone a 0 would basically just be calling them a bottom; it's more like something people would giggle at if they knew that already (which, thanks to the internet, more people do). It's not really a number you'd assign to gay people broadly, though.

The word for gay in chinese is 同性恋 tóng xìng liàn (shorthand TXL online) so actually there is some slang like 24 in Brazil that are based on being near homophones. One popular (online) slang for gay is 通讯录 tóng xùn lù which means "address book/directory" and by extension, 电话本子 diànhuà běnzi which as you can see sounds nothing like the word for gay but means "phone contact book", so it's a layer deepr than 通讯录.

Mod what do you do when something turns out wrong in a drawing but you’re the only one who can see it? I’ve been knitting these mitts and I noticed something I missed in the second one, it’ll take at least another day to fix it and no one else can see the mistake unless i point it out but I don’t feel right just leaving it

depends; if it’s going to drive you absolutely batshit unless you change it, then change it, if it’s not, then don’t! just learn from it and don’t repeat it- on the whole I find it’s best to just move on ahead, you will never make a perfect drawing and could basically spend your whole life reworking the same picture year after year. On the other hand, if, say, you have a character who always wears a glove on one hand and you accidentally draw him wearing it on the other one… I think going back and changing that sorta thing is uh, acceptable? yeah. ahaha.

ok so when i was… hmm i wanna say 11-12 or so? i was watching some movie with my mom and the main characters were a dad and his daughter. the daughter had a british accent but the dad had an american one and when my mom pointed out how that didn’t really make sense i was just like “oh but they showed her mom was british?” and she said yes but she didn’t grow up with her mom so she wouldn’t have picked it up from her

…and i was completely bowled over because it legitimately didn’t occur to me until that moment that accents are like, a socially inherited trait. i had just assumed they were like genetic

in the ks it says you were a part of a museum installation? tell us about that!

I’ll gladly elaborate! This is kind of an interesting bit of TJ lore haha. 

There’s a modern art museum in St. Louis called the Pulitzer, and I was involved in their exhibit called Kota: Digital Excavations in African Art. Kota are ancient African reliquary figures created to watch over and protect the sacred physical remains of ancestors. There are about ~2000 of them still in existence, and what is known about them is very limited. A mathematician named Frederick Cloth came up with an algorithm to collect and sort the data that is known about the Kota that have been preserved. 

Back in 2015, when I was still working with Rampant Interactive, I was the lead programmer on a project to create an interactive digital component to the exhibit involving Unity3D, a huge 50-inch touchscreen, and four projectors to shine images on all four walls of the exhibit room. The aim of the installation was to tie the physical objects together with the data that is known about the reliquary figures. Viewers of the exhibit can use the touch screen to visualize the data, compare and contrast the Kota, and draw their own conclusions about the correlations between the Kota’s distinct physical appearance and the data collected about them. 

I’m actually in this pic to the center left. This was when I was first starting to grow out my locks haha.

I loved working on this project because things like this really help bridge the gap between contemporary art and videogames, and I think museums should work with game developers a lot more often.
