Representation of Space in Blind Persons: Vision as a Spatial Sense
Summary
The reading was talking about different stage of the blind poeple,
- Early Blind : those individual who are inborn blind
- Later Blind : Individual who turned blind after adult
- Elder : Who have a visual impaired to see thing clearly but not in a stage of blind
- Signed Blind-fold : Who are pretended to be blind for an experimentation propose of the research
Durring the experiment of the research, they were put 3 type of blinds into the same situation.
The reading stated that an Early Blind is having a serious circumstance of visual impair, they have a low level of spatial performance and perception. Due to they have never had any visual experience.
when performing similar spatial tasks, later Blind will have a high level of spatial performance . however, because of they are familiar or came across the place.
Its also stated in the research that there are many study literature proposed that “age of onset of blindness is found to have no effect on spatial performance”.
Annotate
The research stated late visual impaired has a higher level of spatial performance compared to an early visual impaired, because they have a visual experience. I admired with the researcher point, I was thinking like as a sight person experiences in a new environment with non-knowledge of the place information. Most of the time we lose in our way, like a tourism needs a local guide to take them around. Likewise, when we are texting while working, our eyes are focus on the phone, and that always caused us an accident of walking to on something. Or even when we consciously walk somewhere but do not notice of something at get hit by it. I totally agree even with him/her propose when I was imagine how could we explain something to someone who have never seen that thing, how would we explain it accurately that they can perception the right picture. Furthermore, what if they could not imagine it, and could not see it as well. How could you explain something unperceptional with out seeing like color? If you say the name of the colour to a late visual impaired, they will know what colour it is as they may have seen it before their impaired. What if we have to explain a colour to an early impaired person which is like how could you explain colour with out saying the name of the colour. According to an experiment of ... In the literature, later visual impaired and early were performed in the slightly same level when both of them were asked to perform in an un. space, At the start both of the ground were struggling, however the later visual impaired pivked up the performance faster. Respond to the reading, I was thinking if I fimiliar the space to the visual impaired, this would allow me to enhance theor spatial performance.
