Yeah you should avoid it you can UNLESS it’s a textbook pirate the fuck out of those. As much as possible. My AP latin textbooks alone cost 200 it’s dumb.

Reading Response #5

There is no question over whether or not our environment is deteriorating. It is. Who’s to blame, though, is highly debated. Is it large corporations and manufacturing companies? Is it the individual citizens of the world, you and me? In their essays, Bill McKibben, Derek Jensen, and Margaret Lundberg all have differing opinions on where the fault lies for our current environmental standing. Each author does a fantastic job utilizing persuasive strategies and arguing his or her point of view.

In “Waste Not, Want Not,” McKibben is partial to guilt trips, placing the blame on individuals. Amongst other claims, McKibben accuses that “[p]lastic water bottles, one after another – 80 million of them get tossed everyday… In a country where almost everyone has access to clean drinking water… I mean, don’t you have a mug?” (557-58). This bold statistic and the accompanying sarcastic question make the reader feel guilty, which could be enough of a persuasion for the reader to consider changing his or her ways.

Jensen’s “Forget Shorter Showers” may make readers breathe a litter easier, as it turns the blame from individuals to large industrial corporations. In almost direct contradiction to McKibben, Jensen reveals that “[t]he whole individualist what-you-can-do-to-save-the-Earth guilt trip is a myth. We, as individuals, are not creating the crises, and we can’t solve them” (566-67). This argument may appeal strongly to those arm-chair activists who are indeed concerned, but ultimately too lazy to get up and make an attempt at change. Be that as it may, Jensen’s essay is still a very persuasive one.

Lundberg takes a whole new look on things, as she places the blame on our dietary habits. It is clear that the production of all kinds of food has changed since the early 1900s, but most American’s ignore the reality of what that truly means. Lundberg’s essay is riddled with shocking facts and statistics. For example, “[a] nonvergetarian diet requires 2.9 times more water, 2.5 times more energy, 13 times more fertilizer…, and 1.4 times more pesticides than does a vegetarian diet” (572). This, along with other little-known information that Lundberg sheds light on, even has me strongly considering making the switch to a vegetarian diet.

Most everyone has concerns for the environment to some extent. All three of these essays pull on a reader’s emotions in one way or another, and in this way they all make for outstanding persuasive arguments.

The Artist Statement of an Urban Independent

In Jennifer Liese’s article “Toward A History (And Future) Of The Artist Statement”, she begins to attempt to explain and concretely define what an artist statement really is. The “unofficial” format for these statements is somewhat universally accepted, but in no point in history was it ever really set in stone. These statements used to be used to explain an artists’ work, with no real format or limit. But as the years went by and centuries passed, statements that used to be romantic, self-doubting, process-oriented, or even exhortatory, became repetitive and dull. The artist statement is now a dreaded piece of work not only for the artists, but for the art professionals that read hundreds of these statements that all sound fairly similar and monotonous.

According to the authors of Art/Work, these statements that are produced by artists fulfill two purposes, they “describe, as simply as possible, what it is that you hope to do, or show, or say, with your art, and what it is that makes you interested in doing, showing, or saying that”. Today artists steer clear of statements that are quirky or daring, because the situations where they are required for are when they need grants or when they have an empty website about me section.

Maretica Potrc is an architect, but around 15 years ago she began creating building-themed art. She thoroughly expresses her belief in the individual's role in creating better living conditions for people in settlements that aren’t government approved. She explains how important self-sustaining technology in the advancement of these communities and how her work is an example of how architecture and technology can make a positive difference. Her artist statement resembles more of a technical and explanatory route that really is centered on her reason for the creation of her artwork.

The “combination of strict guidelines and obscure goals” for these artist statements have ruined the true meaning and creativity that the artist statement can be used for.

Re: Social media and ADHD (Response 5)

From my personal experience, I never thought that it would be possible to have the words “Facebook” and “productivity” in the same sentence. I feel like others much like myself, tend to negatively associate anything social media related with inefficiency. After all, this is the reason why most businesses ban such sites from being accessed on their office computers.

Whenever I sit down on my computer to try and start an essay I usually end up talking to a friend through Facebook chat or watching hours worth of videos on YouTube. Of course my laziness and lack of motivation have on impact on my tendency to procrastinate. However, I find it so much easier to find ways to be distracted when I’m fully connected to social media. My addiction to social media is so incontrollable that I actually have to go on an official hiatus during exam periods.

Before reading Madeline Vann’s article on “Social Media Success with ADHD” I never thought of social media as more than a distraction. For this reason, I found Vann’s article to be very interesting and ironic. Vann talks about the benefits of social media to those individuals diagnosed with ADHD. It’s great that people are starting to take a more positive perspective on social media, as it creates a medium for individuals to creatively channel their ideas and openly express their feelings.

Many people use sites like Tumblr and other blog sites to create online diaries or even inform others on interesting topics, projects, and issues (e.g. the affect of social media on health in year 2020). Social media can be a great learning tool for students as it allows them to share and retrieve information at such a quick rate. Joseph Baker of Edudemic explains the many benefits of social media use for teens and students in his article called “How Students Benefit from Using Social Media” (Baker, 2013).

Through investigation we have learned that social media can be a beneficial tool, but it is also important to remember that too much of it can be detrimental to our learning and overall health. For this reason, it is important for users to remember that a balance needs to exist between work and play.

Re: The Hazards of Using Social Media in Romantic Relationships (Response 5)

I think it is safe to say that the majority of people feel that social media and romantic relationships do not and probably should not mix. Just because of social media’s availability, people are more inclined to open up when compared to in real life, face-to-face and in doing so, they may not be aware of the impact that their statuses, pictures etc. may have on their relationship. Social media make things much more complicated than they really should be. Some people do not like to be the focus of attention nor do they like their personal business to be spoken about. Looking at it in this point of view, I can definitely see why couples may have problems in their relationship or break up because of social media.

Casey Gueren wrote an online article for Women’s Health magazine titled, Don’t Let Social Media Wreck Your Relationship (2013). In the article, she outlines “five rules to make sure Facebook doesn’t screw with your bond.” The fifth rule “brag a little bit” caught my eye because Gueren stated, from a study in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, that partners who regularly share coupling profile pictures and statuses about their relationship are more likely to feel happier about their bond because it shows that they are not ignoring their partner, they are including them. These rules (to me) are rational changes/goals/steps to achieve and maintain the best relationship possible while using not only Facebook but any social media.
