I’ve seen a lot of recent posts saying “X has happened! And the media isn’t covering it!”
Which is great - call out the media when they fail, absolutely. That’s our obligation.
But CITE YOUR SOURCES. Don’t just say “this happened! You need to be outraged!” Give us a link to follow back on, an eyewitness we can get firsthand reporting from, some sort of evidence we can use.
Because if you’re just howling that the sky is falling, without a scientist or person-with-sky-related-concussions confirming that yes, some of the sky has fallen, you’re not actually helping.
A theme of this class is how the media shapes our understanding of public health. I love the New York Times, but I think it was a bit ridiculous to chronicle what happened to Dr. Spencer and where he went leading up to his hospitalization. What’s the point of this? I think all this article serves to do is encourage the public’s misplaced fear of catching Ebola. Increasing the hype around that fear diverts our attention from the far more pressing crisis abroad.

one of the top running stories of the day on the Sydney Morning Herald website is a story about a teenager being killed in a car crash with her father and sister. alongside this story they've chosen to run one picture of her smiling and another that's a PG-nude bathroom selfie of the 15-year-old now dead girl. my mind is just boggled at how they couldn't decide that running only one image of her was better than running another that borders on child porn.
in no way is this a condemnation of the girl taking the picture, or posting it wherever it was that smh.com.au found it. she's a teenage girl, we all did the exact same thing at that age and lots of us still do. whatever, no judgement. what i do find vile and reprehensible is that adults who have a duty to report responsibly chose to run a revealing, personal image of someone who cannot consent or object to it. someone who is underaged and deceased.
the only motive for something like this that i can imagine is sensationalism for the sake of drumming up page views. the Sydney Morning Herald is exploiting the death and eroticism of a 15-year-old girl for it's own corporate gain and it's akin to assault.

FTSE directors are normally employees of their shareholders. Most have parachute protections at every turn. Their pay and benefits are a complete anachronism to 99.9999% of company directors. But their remuneration is a commercial decision for their non-executive directors and shareholders.
When people gob off about company directors, please caveat that you are only talking about 0.0001% of all company directors. The rest of us have a lot at stake in building our businesses and employing the large numbers of people that we do.
