This sign can be found in an Arhuaco community in Sierra Nevada, Colombia. The sign reads something like: "Non-indigenous people are not allowed to enter. Also no video footage or photographs." The indigenous people of the Sierra Nevada (Santa Marta) are descendants of the Tayronas, a great civilization whose masterful work with gold and its architecture attracts tourists and grave robbers alike to the region. Indigenous peoples have rich and ancient cultures and view their social, economic, environmental, and spiritual systems. They make valuable contributions to the world’s heritage thanks to their traditional knowledge and their understanding of ecosystem management. But indigenous peoples are also among the world’s most vulnerable, marginalized, and disadvantaged groups. We must ensure that their voices are heard, their rights respected, and their well-being improved. Travel is a gorgeous thing when done respectfully.
