Those mosquitoes managed to spread their transgenes to other populations because the people involved didn’t anticipate the formation of viable F1 (i.e. first-generation) hybrids, which then lead to further hybridization, as usual: F1 hybrids form a kind of “genetic bridge” between their parent lifeforms. This is a good example of a real-life consequence of the tendency, even among biologists who should know better, to be unduly skeptical about the viability of animal hybrids. The fact that hybridization is a common motif in the evolution of many kinds of animals (and other lifeforms!) has been a theme of this blog, so I thought I’d note this explicitly.
