If you ever wondered how Lucy managed to keep up that frantic comedic energy, apparently the secret was a steady diet of Vitameatavegamin and a "king-size" tobacco habit. This 1953 ad is a masterpiece of mid-century irony; while she beams at us with those perfectly manicured lashes, she was famously a die-hard Chesterfield smoker who would sneak her preferred brand into Philip Morris tins to appease the show's sponsors. The copy claims her "throat can tell" it’s a Philip Morris—which is technically true, though perhaps not for the reasons the marketing department intended. It’s a vivid reminder of an era when TV stars were essentially walking billboards, and the "no cigarette hangover" was a legitimate (and entirely fabricated) selling point.
