Today I went to a Subway that my mother once lived in. We ate lunch in her grandfather's bedroom.

Other than turning a porch into the sandwich kitchen and putting the bathrooms where the kitchen used to be, they haven't changed much in turning it into a restaurant. Fireplaces, stairs, porches. I even think the front door is original.

This was Aunt Cora's room. Things I know about Aunt Cora:

- She was my mother's great aunt.

- She married but never had children, idk what happened to her husband but she then came back to live out the rest of her days with her brother (& various other family that stayed there).

- She got pneumonia as a child after having her hair washed, after which she decided hair washing was unhealthy and she never washed her hair again.

- Her hair was very long, though she always wore it pinned up. But she brushed it a lot, with corn starch or baking soda.

- She saved the hair that came out in her brush. All of it. Forever. They found it in a chest when she died.

- She sat in her chair in her room, or right behind the door on the screened in porch, all the time. She didn't talk (at least not to the children) or seem to really do anything. She was creepy.

I have asked around, but have been unable to ascertain either what they did with the hair after she died, or the condition or quantity of it. Was it in a box? Nearly braided? Folded & tired with a ribbon? Large or small wad of hair? How much hair does a person shed in a lifetime, and what would it be like to see it all collected in one place? I really feel I need to know. But there may not be anyone alive anymore who has this info.

I did get to see a picture of her, which is good because I NEEDED to be able to visualize this woman. I'll try to post it later. She's small, but not overly creepy to look at.

I must have read about a character in a book who also saved all her hair, but I have always thought of this in relation to Aunt Cora, whenever I was told about her. The idea was that this person had heard that God had numbered the hairs on her head, so she thought she'd be expected to account for them all, come Judgement Day.

Nobody really knows why Cora did it.
