that said, can i just say im a gig worker, and fuck rev.com? probably not many ppl here have used it but it's a site where you can get things transcribed for a dollar a minute. many companies use rev to transcribe shows, interviews, podcasts, etc. such as this American life, writers for the new York times, food network and just a plethora of others. for a dollar a minute. previously, workers were paid .45c per minute typed of that dollar, meaning after accounting for unpaid research and unpaid time looking for a workable job, you could almost make minimum wage sometimes!
well, in an forum post last week, NOT emailed to the thousands of workers, many of whom dont use the forums, "the team" decided that this wasn't working for them and lowered the new minimum pay to 30c a minute, meaning if you transcribe a 30 minute file, you will get $9. $6 less than you got 5 days ago for the same work. it's a 33% pay cut on pay that wasnt great to begin with.
a consensus seems to be that on a good (not too many speakers, not recorded on your phone, not next to a live fucking band, not 5 crew guys all talking while obv unmiced) file with good typing speed, a minute of audio takes 4 to type, not including research time. so now instead of making $7.5 and hour, its $4.5. pretty significant.
this was done to "incentivize" everyone to work on files rev says are workable, since good files with clear audio were supposed to be .30c now, but besides the fact that that's punishment, not incentive, and their algorithm for determining quality may as well be rolling dice, the people who decided this arent workers and dont know the quality. if these files were workable or profitable TO work on, they would be claimed. if people weren't risking getting a bad grade on a file they took to get it out if thequeue, there by risking their livelihoods taking on risky files, they would do it.
