this piece is a direct prequel of In The Spotlight (fff 302)
This gala is one of the most pretentious events Dajsper has ever been to, and xe's been to xir own wedding. Sure, this is pretty much the elite's occasion to gather and collectively hide their dirty laundry under an act of charity, but xe doubts that a university receiving private funding requires this much… opulence and grandeur.
Xe really wishes xe didn't have to be here, but as his father's son he'd be talked about more if he hadn't come. Besides, as the sole heir of eir mother's estate, it would have been unbecoming of Irami not to match eir father's donation to the university. And xe'd be loath to leave em alone at a gathering like this.
And so Dajsper is there, in a suit with navy accents but made of a shimmering silver and ice blue fabric that matches xir wife's dress. Don't get them wrong, they're good colors — especially in contrast to xir parents' all black attire — but xe wishes xe could have worn Volt's brighter colors. That would have pissed xir mother off.
Though xe supposes, with this gala being held at ZIoT, there's a very good reason to attend. And they spot that reason sitting at a table in the corner, with a group of other TAs not far from a table of milling department heads. Chief among them, the Cogsmith. Or, well, Doctor Zekkanid in this setting. Of course the man wouldn't be far from his protegé.
'"I'm pretty sure I've seen Tumaril,"' they tell Irami, leaning slightly down as to whisper. The flash of a camera goes off nearby.
Irami laughs as another flash goes off, taking xir hand in eirs to pull them down. '"Figured out a way to get to your partner already?"'
Dajsper makes eye contact with Doctor Zekkanid over someone's shoulder. Xe nods in greeting and glances purposefully at where xir parents are talking to the dean. Xe can see the man's eyes sparkle with mishief from over here. '"I'd say I have,"' xe answers, letting xir wife lead them over to some distant aunt of eirs who is standing fairly close to xir parents.
It is a matter of only a few minutes of empty chatter before xe feels xir mother's eyes land on xem with enough intensity to fold anyone who isn't used to it. He squeezes Irami's hand, a gesture immediately returned. Seconds later, he meets his father's eyes.
'"Ah, there he is,"' his father says, motioning for him to come over.
Dajsper excuses themself from their wife and eir aunt with a quiet question and a silent answer, and he slips into Erun as he heads over. Chin high, steps measured. Perfection is an uncomfortable mask, but Erun is his father's son. He knows how to make himself fit it seamlessly.
So he smiles and shakes hands with the dean and plays the part of the socialite kid — don't be bashful about your talent, don't be boastful of your position — as Doctor Zekkanid fakes interest in things he's heard a million times before through the Underground.
And then the Cogsmith gleams in Doctor Zekkanid's, and Voltage knows in her heart what the man is going to do. '"We have quite the prodigy with us too. I was just talking to him earlier. Excuse me a second,"' Doctor Zekkanid says, tilting his head in barely a request before stepping away.
The dean rushes to pick up the conversation. '"Quite the prodigy indeed, yes yes."' With her smile fixed in place, she sends an almost subtle reprimanding look toward Doctor Zekkanid. '"Please, forgive Professor Zekkanid. He's been quite taken with our student as he's pursuing his doctorate with him. He's the professor's TA for Bioinformatics as well,"' she smiles.
Behind Erun's mask, Dajsper pounces. '"Apa'Riani? Liralia and I hadn't realized he was attending,"' he says, unrepentant beneath their mother's invisible glare.
The dean blinks at them almost owlishly, if only for a second. Score one for breaking a socialite's mask though. '"You know him?"'
'"We know of him for sure,"' he tells the woman. Keeping the pride out of his voice is a struggle. '"His work could easily be revolutionary."'
'"He must be quite something then."' His father's eyes nearly burn into the side of his head. '"It isn't often that Erun shows interest in someone else's work. I can't wait to meet him,"' his father says, and Dajsper has to stop the mask from bristling, because xe knows xir father. Xe knows the man's arrogance like it's the code at the base of xir existance, the blind thing that keeps him from ever realizing other people have talent. Erun can take it for himself, he has since birth. But Tumaril deserves better than fake interest.
The dean chuckles before Erun has the chance to break his mask. '"Quite something indeed, Mister Wiroski. Ah, there they are."'
Erun doesn't whip to the side, but only because he's still Dajsper beneath, and Volt even further down, and she's been counting the time the Cogsmith's been gone. It still takes them all their focus not to gasp when they see Tumaril up close. The navy suit — in the same exact shade as xir own suit's accents — is stunning on him, and the warm brass details match both his prosthetic eye and the dress Ideli is wearing, off somewhere with her uncle. They're also oddly reminiscent of the bronze Volt wears. She could go weak at the knees.
But xe won't. The game's just begun now that Tumaril is here and shaking hands with xir parents. So Erun smiles, all fake and perfect, while Dajsper pushes sincerity in their handshake and Volt plans their escape. '"Erun Wiroski, it's a pleasure."' And because Tumaril deserves better, deserves the world, xe doesn't grin. '"I've read your research into biotechnological integration through magical resonance. It's quite ingenious."'
And Tumaril's eyes sparkle the way they always do, and it's truly a pity Dajsper can't kiss him right now. Xe'd really like to.
so, i got tagged by @lizardperson [here] to share a wip. i have nothing in terms of writing, but i do have a nice wip of a magazine cover-esque art of Dajsper
now you have half a clue how fucking messy my art process is. oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Home: What makes your character think of or feel like they are home?
hii! thank you so much
for Aira and Ele, home is the scent of nature and firewood and the cawing of crows. it reminds them of the farmhouse, which was home already back when Aira's mother owned it, but now that Leo has it it's a thousand times more home than either their houses
Beriel is reminded of home in loud markets and big crowds. to her, home is definitely not a place
Dani is caught between two answers: chocolate cookies, the rustle of paper and stained sinks, or fireplaces, dark stone and the smell of sweat. either with his father or with Aleji and Luz
Aleji and Luz are entirely each other's home, so anything that reminds them of the other is a go. for Luz, it's mostly coffee and inkstains and old leatherbound books, and for Aleji it's dandelions and gold jewelry and pretty knives
to the entire Unseen (Syphe, Dajsper, Tumaril, Ideli, Irami and Meiviza), home is the base. metal and stone and the heavy scent of grease from Tumaril's workshop, and it's clothes draped on every surface and bowls of shared food and rock music playing quietly in the background while someone argues
to Lukiat, home is still barn roofs and lukewarm soup and the kindness of strangers (and children's laughter and soap bubbles and a quiet steady presence at his side)
to Niev, home is casual touches and magic skittering over his skin and the warmth of pride in his chest
Reyenn doesn't quite have a concept of home yet. but when he looks for comfort, he thinks of the cold

It should have been a quiet day. Classes in the morning, and then shadowing father at a board meeting in the afternoon. Normal. Perfectly ordinary. Ideal conditions to sneak out with Syphe that night to keep the cameras off of him.
Dajsper’s father has an assistant send xem away the second xe steps into the lobby. A situation to take care of at home. It could mean anything from xir mother trying to fire twenty people in the house staff for breaking a vase, to someone dying. Though the second option is far lezs likely. Dajsper still tells xir driver to speed, off to the family townhouse, out in the countryside, rather than the penthouse at the edge of First Terrace.
Xir mother doesn’t say a word when she pulls xem out of the car. Just sends xem to xir room, where a new pressed suit hangs by the mirror and a stylist hangs behind the door. Xe doesn’t sigh and lets xemself be pulled around, to clean off and to be dressed and touched up. Lets xemself be morphed into xir parents’ perfect marionette.
From the fuss everyone is making, xe would dare guess xir parents have found someone to show xem off to. Xe closes xir eyes as the stylist covers up any minor imperfection on xir face, breathing deeply so the heartbreak won’t show.
Seven months. Xe’d almost hoped they had forgotten. Xe can’t tell if it’s cruelty or kindness that they’d waited so long before striking their axe down on xir end of the deal.
The house staff disappears the moment xe gets to the entryway, save for Master Valdig. The old butler just stands at attention by the door, while xir mother leads them to the lounge room right beside. It’s not five minutes later, two hours after xe arrived, that xe spies another car pull up into their driveway through the window, a discreet and somewhat common model, but maintained to perfection.
Master Valdig opens their front door exactly at the same time as the first figure steps out, too covered by the curated trees to see who. Dajsper counts in xir mind as Master Valdig greets the guests and guides them to the lounge. Xir mother and xe both stand up right as a tall broad man with gelled brown hair steps into the room, a young woman right behind him. Dajsper resolutely does not stiffen as xe lets xir mother take point.
‘“Duke Zaintoff. It is an honor to welcome you to our house,”’ she says, her hands relaxed at her front as she nods. ‘“I’m afraid my husband cannot join us right now, but he will be here in a few minutes. I apologize if you were expecting to meet him.”’
‘“It is quite alright. This is just a social visit. I don’t bring business to your door,”’ the Duke says, his smile tight. He doesn’t offer xir mother a handshake.
She still smiles right back. Dajsper steps next to her just as her hand comes up. Perfectly timed to look natural. ‘“Please, allow me to introduce you to our son Erun.”’
‘“It’s an honor to meet you, your grace,”’ xe says, bowing xir head a perfect thirty degree angle.
The Duke smiles the slightest bit wider and offers xem a hand. Interesting. ‘“It’s a pleasure. Though I believe I’ve seen you before at some of the Galas your father has attended.”’
‘“It does not sound unlikely, your grace,”’ xe smiles, shaking the man’s hand — not too strong, but not light, don’t be intimidating and don’t be weak-willed — as xe does so.
The man laughs, a thing so fake it puts xir mother’s paintings to shame. ‘“He is too polite, Madame Wiroski. Ah, may I introduce you to my daughter Liralia, young man?”’
The young woman behind him takes a step forward, giving the slightest nod toward xem first and then xir mother. Dajsper nods back, just a bit lower, and offers her a hand. Palm up, not for a handshake. She doesn’t miss a beat in laying her hand over xirs, and allows xem to pull it higher. Xe doesn’t press a kiss to the back of it, but the gesture is clear. ‘“It’s an honor to meet you, my lady.”’
‘“A pleasure,”’ she returns, her voice flat and… somewhat familiar.
Dajsper glances at the Duke once xe lets go of Lady Zaintoff’s hand. He’s not as good at controlling his expression as the businessmen xe’s been hanging around since xe was eight. The glint in his eyes is clearly approving.
On the other hand, Lady Zaintoff remains silent and impassible. And though her expression is that of a statue, so are her lineaments. Remarkably beautiful, if made colder by her blue eyes and night black hair. If her name didn’t already hint at her being the blood sister of the Imperial Princess, her appearance certainly would do so.
A door opens on the upper floor, where xe knows that secondary entrance is. Xir father’s steps are confident as he comes into the room, pretending to have been in the house the whole time. ‘“Duke Zaintoff. I apologize for being unable to join you right away.”’
‘“It’s truly no problem. Your son is a remarkable young man,”’ the Duke says, offering a handshake to xir father. ‘“I was hoping I could talk to you and your wife in private.”’
‘“Of course. I’m sure our children can be trusted on their own,”’ xir father immediately offers. He sends xem a glance out of the corner of their eye, a clear instruction.
‘“May I suggest the gardens, your grace? The weather is wonderfully pleasant today,”’ xe says, xir head bowed.
The Duke smiles, all business. ‘“That sounds like a wonderful idea, yes. Do take care of my daughter for me, yes?”’
‘“Of course, your grace.”’ Xe turns to Lady Zantoff and gestures to the door leading out onto the patio in the distance. ‘“If you would like to follow me, my lady.”’ Xe waits for her to nod before leading her out, leaving their parents behind.
They walk in silence along the paved path. and Dajsper makes sure to pull out a chair for her so that when he sits they will both have their backs to the cameras. If there is one thing xir father’s arrogance is good for, it’s this: he would never think that Dajsper could outsmart him on purpose.
‘“I apologize for the lack of entertainment. I fear I learned of your visit quite late. Would you care for anything to eat or drink?”’ xe says.
She smiles at xem, just as cold as she’s been the whole time. Tough there’s a spark of interest in her eyes. Suspicion too, and maybe even curiosity. ‘“It’s quite alright, though I suppose I wouldn’t mind some water.’”
Dajsper calls for a staff member with a gesture, asking them to bring water and glasses, but xe pours it for her xemself. As she lifts the glass though, the sun catches on a ring at her right pinky and glints off of it.
It’s nothing more than a detail, almost unnoticeable. That is, if Dajsper hadn’t spent the past two years in close contact with Syphe. And close contact with Syphe trains you to look for details, no matter how unwillingly. Details are, after all, the key to truth. And this? This is a familiar detail, though Dajsper has only seen it in moonlight rather than sunlight.
Almost hesitantly, xe taps a rhythm on the table, blocking the camera’s view with xir shoulders. Lady Zaintoff doesn’t flinch or startle, but she does glance rather intensely at xir hand. No good. ‘“I must admit, I haven’t seen you before at the Galas.”’
‘“I don’t enjoy them much.’” She raises an eyebrow at xem, still as perfect as marble. Her eyes are fixed on xir own though, and she pointedly glances at her hand on the table. ‘“The music is dreadful,’” she says. Beneath it, she taps a rhythm of her own.
Dajsper laughs politely. Xe draws figures on the surface of the table, and speaks when xe catches her looking. ‘“Quite true. May I ask then what music–”’ xe starts, and doesn’t skip a beat when xe lifts his finger from the table mid-sentence. The camera sparks, its circuit fried. What a sudden technical failure– ‘“you enjoy? I’m partial to electronic one myself,’” xe grins.
Lady Zaintoff’s eyes are on the camera — smart, so much smarter than her father made her look like — before settling on xem with a smile. It’s not a kind one. ‘“The kind that covers up the sound of me punching you on a pub floor.”’
Dajsper grins. ‘“Ah, I do think I’ve had the imprint of your ring in my shoulder a couple of times.”’
‘“Fully deserved for being a condescending asshole, I’m sure.’”
There’s the Nova xe knows. ‘“That’s quite the language for a princess,’” xe smiles.
Nova glares at xem, not moving an inch. ‘“That’s a lot of judgment from a sir.”’
Dajsper, secure in the knowledge that no cameras can see xem, grimaces. ‘“Understood.”’
‘“Fortunately, or I would have had to question your so-proclaimed genius,”’ ey says. Ey looks xem up and down and taps eir fingers on the glass. ‘“Should I guess that the ward I’ve heard about lately is a certain volatile ghost?”’
Dajsper smiles sharply. ‘“Has anyone ever told you that you look beautiful when you show off your intelligence?”’
‘“Flattery won’t get you anywhere.”’ Ey looks to the side, where xir father’s study lays within the walls of the house. Xe can see all of their parents through the window.
Nova’s expression shuts down the slightest bit. ‘“How much longer do you think they’ll keep pretending to be giving us a choice?”’
‘“Thirty minutes,”’ xe says. ‘“Maybe forty if your father pulls up something unexpected. My father is extremely direct in his business dealings.”’
Nova snorts, a sound far sadder than anything xe’s heard from em in the year xe’s known em. ‘“That’s all we are to them, aren’t we? Business.’”
‘“The perks of polite society, I’m afraid.”’
Ey doesn’t slump on the table, but eir shoulders lower. The weight of a title. It’s something xe’s familiar with. ‘“Long list?”’ xe asks, if only to pass the time.
Ey meets xir eyes with a soul-tiredness that xe deeply resonates with. ‘“You’re the twenty-third.”’
Dajsper almost whistles. Xe doesn’t, but xir eyebrows shoot up. ‘“You’re the first.”’
‘“They started high.”’
‘“They started late,”’ xe corrects. ‘“I… traded my ability to choose months ago.”’
Nova’s eyebrow rises again. ‘“In exchange for taking in this ward?’”
‘“Someone really should have said something about your smarts.”’
‘“I’m taking that as a yes.”’ Ey’s brows furrow and Ey scowls at xem. ‘“Why would you ever trade your choice for that ghost? That’s just idiotic.”’
Dajsper clicks xir tongue, but holds xir words at bay. ‘“He wasn’t safe on the streets.”’
‘“You’re fucking with me.”’
Dajsper meets Nova’s eyes and slowly shakes their head. Ey huffs, low and bothered. ‘“Fuck me, Wraith is a street kid. How in Void did he survive in the Underground? Isn’t he, like, twelve?”’
‘“Thirteen as best as the doctors can guess.”’
Nova’s lips pull downward. ‘“And to get him off the streets, you’re getting married off at seventeen?”’
‘“Eighteen in two weeks. If they can push whatever they have planned off until then, no one can accuse them of pressuring me anymore,”’ xe says, grabbing the carafe to refill xir glass.
Nova barks out a sad laugh. ‘“Yeah, I’m familiar with the concept. Eighteen in a little more than a month.”’
‘“And dead if we get caught in the Underground?”’ Dajsper asks, only half joking.
‘“Disowned at the very least. And with that it’s anyone’s guess,”’ ey huffs, lifting eir glass in a mock-toast.
Dajsper turns again to look through the window. They’re still talking animatedly. Xe narrows xir eyes. ‘“Say. I may have a… proposition for you.”’
‘“Go on.”’
‘“It’s rather hard to be caught by a member of the Underground,”’ xe starts. ‘“I know I wouldn’t catch anyone. Would you?”’
Nova raises eir brow, but grins. ‘“I would not. Are you suggesting an alliance perhaps?”’
‘“I am. The problem is convincing our parents. Well, more your father,”’ xe amends.
Ey snorts. ‘“Relies entirely on your parents. He won’t listen to my requests.”’
‘“Ass,’” xe mutters, which gets xem a laugh from Nova.
‘“That’s him alright. I suppose I may have an additional proposition for you as well though,”’ ey grins. ‘“How do you feel about causing a scandal?”’
Dajsper tilts xir head and smiles sadly. ‘“I try to keep the scandalous ways in the Underground, I fear. I still need to be my parents’ perfect son.”’
‘“Erun Dessiv Wiroski, isn’t that right? Though you don’t seem a lot like him right now,”’ ey challenges with a raised eyebrow. ‘“Though to be fair you don’t seem like Voltage either. You don’t make me want to punch you as much.”’
‘“You’re not as much fun to irritate as Nova either, Lady Zaintoff,”’ xe says.
Ey huffs. ‘“That’s more like it.’”
Dajsper sighs and glances back at the window. Their parents’ discussion seems to be winding down. They’re running out of time. ‘“I suppose I’m not… opposed to the idea. But I can’t be as much of an active participant.”’
‘“I’m alright with taking the fall for it,”’ ey says. ‘“As long as I get to start a fight the next time I see Voltage. There’s a caged match that I was really looking forward to tonight.”’
‘“I could have Wraith place a bet for you, if you’d like.”’
‘“I still want my bar fight.”’
‘“Then I guess that shall be the price I pay,”’ xe says.
Nova grins. It’s a feral thing that makes xem think of bloodied fists and chipped teeth. ‘“Would you cause a scandal with me then, Erun?”’ ey says, offering xem eir hand with the palm down.
This time, when xe takes it, xe does press a kiss to its back. ‘“I would be honored to. Though I suppose if we are to be accomplices, you may as well call me Dajsper. It’s the name I favor.”’
‘“You may call me Irami then,”’ ey offers, a wry smile on eir lips.
Dajsper smiles. Xe stands up and offers a hand to Irami, the perfect picture of a gentleman. ‘“Well then, Irami, may I suggest the art room? It’s suitably excusable and out of the way without being ignored.”’
‘“How daring. That sounds like a truly wonderful idea,”’ ey returns, taking xir hand to stand and putting eir hand on xir elbow when xe offers it. ‘“I do hope your reputation holds true. If you’re not at the very least a good kisser, I will be severely disappointed.”’
‘“I suppose you will find out for yourself soon,”’ xe says. Ey laughs, a clear and ringing sound that makes xem smile. It might not end up the worst thing to happen to xem, whatever comes from this.
It might even, as Irami presses them into a wall and pushes eir lips against xirs, be fun. It certainly is when a housemaid finally finds them — breathless, Dajsper’s suit jacket somewhere on the floor and xir pressed shirt halfway off — and yells. And as someone pulls Irami off of xem, xe’s forced to admit ey might be the better kisser of the two. Xe’s never been quite this dizzy.
Happy Storyteller Saturday! Your character is getting married, what does their ideal wedding look like? (and if they have got married, how did the wedding actually go?)
hey Alina, happy STSunday! this is hella fun, i have an assortment of weddings past and future that are so very canonical
Leo and Yume had a really beautiful but quite small civil wedding, and then a bigger reception after at Leo's parents' restaurant, and the place was packed. speaking of his parents, they were a bit sad there wouldn't be a church wedding, but with Yume being a) half-kitsune and b) shintoist, there wasn't really much chance. not that they know Yume is half-kitsune
i think the most surprising part of it all is that Laura, Aira's mother, was Leo's best (wo)man. they don't get along much now (Leo actually goes nearly no-contact with her at the end of book 1) but at the time they were still really close
also, a couple of days after the wedding and right before their honeymoon (Yume took Leo to Akita, which is where she was born), they had to go into Ona's Milan colony to register the wedding, do the magical vows (which are slightly different) and do all the stuff to register Leo as partner to a magicant. a lot of tiring burocratic stuff, but Leo is technically now allowed to go in and out of the district on his own. he just doesn't because he hates being stared at by everyone on the street
Dajsper and Irami's wedding was a shitshow from the beggining. fuck it, even earlier. they met because their parents were considering candidates for a forced marriage (and i posted a piece about it). the two of them realized they were each other's best chance at a marriage that doesn't suck, so they forced their parents' hands by creating a scandal: the two were caught by the house staff with Irami "assaulting" Dajsper
the parents had to hush the situation as much as possible, so they forced the two to pretend they'd been lovers already and spun it as a story of "finding the bonds that were already between their families" and "encouraging young love"
the wedding happened within two months, as soon as both were eighteen, and they had zero say in it. it was an absolutely lavish grandiose affair with thousands of guests (most of which Dajsper and Irami had never met). it was way more of a networking event for their parents than it was their wedding, tho it was perfectly beautiful and aesthetic and plenty of (perfectly staged and edited) photos made their way online. this kickstarted their journey into becoming the celebrity couple of Reiki, tho they did the rest on their own
if you ask them though, what they consider their actual "wedding" is the bar brawl they got in as soon as they came back from the honeymoon they were on (it was basically a fancy grounding. couldn't leave the beach house, cameras everywhere, security at every entrance and window, zero privacy). immediately after the browl Dajsper took Irami to meet Syphe and Tumaril, who had homemade muffins, a lot of alchool and a banner saying "congrats on the ruse"
Ideli and Tumaril elope through the Underground. the officiant is a guy who got generously bribed to keep everything hush hush, the wedding certificates were hacked into the database by Dajsper under layers of protection to keep them from being destroyed, the "wedding" was held in Raminip's backyard. only other people present were Irami and Dajsper (respectively bridesman and groomsmaid) (yes that is correct) plus Meiviza, Syphe and Nahye (friend through the Undernet). they plan on making things official and public once Ideli is Empress, though they'd give an altered timeline of events
Ele and Beriel haven't been together long, but the topic does come up. mostly because it would make it a lot easier for Ele to have access to a magic-centric higher education (which is a dream come true for her) and be taken more seriously, because then Beriel can easily pull strings for her. they are however apprehensive about it being too soon, about being too young, Ele doesn't want to "use" Beriel and what if things don't last? they're both very anxious about long-lasting relationships
so what ends up happeping is that Beriel pulls really minimal strings to get Ele the tests and certifications she needs to get into a university on their own, and they live together for a while but don't get married in the short term. that will be a few years down the line
they have still talked a bit about what the ideal wedding would look like for them both. it may be a bit tough to do, because Ele absolutely wants her parents there, but at the time the two talk about it they may not be allowed into the Colony, much less into Navilee. they both agree that they want a small wedding, just close family and friends, and that they're both gonna keep their surnames and if kids enter the mix then the kids would hypenate
the one thing they've found so far that they disagree on is where. Ele would like an outdoor wedding, while Beriel would rather be indoor. the tentative plan is indoor but with really big windows. and that's about all they have since they are very much on the "let's not be hasty" train
Aleji and Luz were planning on getting married between books one and two. they would if they could get in contact with Aleji and Dani's guardian, and it is very worrying that they can't. and for as much as they're worried that they don't have a lot of time before things go to shit, they're more worried about the man. they end up postponing for close to a year and get married near the end of book two and "off-screen", as soon as they manage to get in contact with the man, ensure he's safe and he's good to meet them
that wedding is very little more than a civil wedding. quite literally vows, papers, a small lunch together with people they consider safe to be in the know, and then it's back to work acting like nothing ever happened. this doesn't mean they're, like, "careless" about it. Luz convinces Aleji into custom-made clothes, they have some decorations around, the rings are stunning and Aleji absolutely gets walked down the isle. both of them are bawling through it
they'll still have a bigger wedding when it's safe to do so, even if it'll be more of a vow renewal for them. but that one will be huge, and they already have a list of things they want for it
it will be a night wedding under the stars, Luz is going to wear this iridescent dress and a lot of extremely colorful jewelry, and Aleji's suit jacket is going to be knee length and flare out at the waist like a dress and sure it's gonna be in Izerkean style as a base but they will use accessories from italian and chilean traditional weddings. Dani is going to be the ring bearer since they can't both have him in their wedding party. Aleji's guardian already walked them down the aisle so this time it's Leo's turn. Luz has a color palette and an aesthetic in mind and she will not budge. there's already the start (400 people) of a wedding invitation list
but that's for later, right now their focus is on the "get married" part rather than the "wedding" part
Lukiat, Reyenn and Niev will get married and it's gonna be the most politically convoluted thing so that the leaders of the nations and the general public cannot go "but why". the why is very clear and very useful and a huge spoiler, but you get to know that this was all Edra's plan (of course)
i can't tell you about the actual wedding, but the ideal wedding is on the smaller scale (we're still talking a hundred or so people). it would be on a sunny day in a flowery field or park or garden but it must be out in nature. it would absolutely be a day-long thing, if not longer. literally just a huge celebration. there's decorative flowers and gemstones everywhere that won't make Lukiat trip and a lot of music. the three of them would spend hours dancing
Edra would absolutely be the ringbearer (this kid is winning at life) and in ideal world have Kea and Sarie in his wedding party alongside the rest of his private guard (minus Niev for obvious reasons). Niev's wedding party would have his sister Erlis, probably Aira, Meiviza and Tumaril and a couple of people from his time in the arena. Reyenn's wedding party has a not as weird as it seems assortment of people, with Ele, Beriel and Dajsper for sure, and probably Aleji and Luz. Lukiat's half-siblings are the flowerkids
i don't know who'd get walked down the isle, but these madlads might actually have three isles so all three of them can be walked down. Niev would absolutely get walked down the isle by his sister. not for lack of options, his father is there, he's just a huge crier and the tears will be visible and loud. Lukiat would get walked down by his father and both of them would be barely holding back tears. Reyenn... i don't know. there are quite a few options for him actually. what i can tell you is this: even in a perfect world where his father is there, Reyenn would not get walked down by his father. Vez might, Leo might, hell Luz might. actually, Luz is sorta very likely
Mia and Guido's wedding happens when Ike is fifteen. this makes Ari eleven and the twins are newborns. it's a winter wedding, very pretty and white and sparkly (not in a church because it's the second wedding for both of them) and almost everyone there is a Harbinger, connected to a Harbinger or at least in the know. literally the only person who is completely unaware is Gaia (her parents both know about the Harbingers but aren't ones themselves). and even so, she can tell something's up
also yes, this does mean that both Mia's and Guido's families are at least aware of the Harbingers. actually, Guido's entire surviving family (hehe) is Harbingers, and many of Mia's siblings and their kids (Ike's cousins) plus some of her uncles and aunts actually get fully involved with the Harbingers
theirs was a day long event between ceremony and reception. it came right after three really successful big Harbinger operations in Europe (one regarding seismic activity, one with a massive storm coming from the atlantic and they drove an Order cell out of Thessaloniki) so spirits are very high. also at some point Zeno and Diana video-called to give their congratulations and literally everyone is trying to make conversation through a single phone
between hyperactive kids and adults high on success, the affair is extremely loud and bubbly and bright. if Gaia sees plates and champagne flutes floating by themselves and people talking to the air, no she doesn't. she's smart enough to mind her own business. if she gains a fascination for magic and the supernatural then that's between her and the books under her bed
and last but not least, Ike and Zeno. they get married after everything's gone to shit and been fixed, but from the moment Ike is back in Milan literally everyone knows it will happen. Diana teases them about marriage three times before they even get together
their ideal wedding is a spring wedding. everything about it is gonna give Zeno's grandfather a heart attack, from the fact that Ike is a guy (so no church wedding) (thank you catholicism) to how incredibly colorful it would be. Ike tries to put together a somewhat coheseve color scheme but honestly neither of them cares that much
besides a lot of Ike's attention is directed at the suits. honestly, menswear for weddings (at least in the west) is extremely limited and i have a problem with it, Ike has a broblem with it, Ike's a fashion designer and is taking the direct approach to the situation. their suits will be intricate and stunning and he will accept nothing less. he would sooner sew them by hand than wear a black and white suit
ohohoh this is fun. i have a couple of idiots who actually had to hand in a resume to get a job, so i'll get them
Aleji ✵ Head Researcher in the University's Department
very consistent high grades, independant research in uni and professor reccomendations can get you places. specifically in the university's research department. from there it's easy work to get a lab and start on (supervised) independent research that then expands to a small team
Syphe ✵ Interning as a Junior Administrator in the Reikian Court
private tutoring until highschool, then top grades in a private highschool, internships at a big company over the summer, captain of the finance club, vice-captain of the debate team (and a childhood in the Underground. the government really needs info on the Underground) (it's not a bribe, it's just encouragement) (most of the info he gives is fake)
Dajsper ✵ IT Security in the Reikian Court
nepo baby. (jk xe actually had a perfectly good resume with all xir techonlogical skills and additional courses) (the fact that xir father is the CEO of the main digital security company in Reiki sure helped tho)
Meiviza ✵ PA to the Imperial Princess
a slew of scholarships in her name, consistent top-class grades, class rapresentative for a number of years, a lot of languages and self defense training (plus Irami already knew her)
Tumaril ✵ TA for the Bioinformatical Algorythms
he built a fucking prosthetic leg out of scraps, programmed it and attached it to his missing limb in under a week, while kept prisoner and heavily injured by a collapsed building. bro trust me, he can do it
Niev ✵ Personal Guard to the Xire
his sponsor made the resume and it was almost literally just "that's the guy that killed four void beasts on his own in 10 minutes. you might want him"
🎻 VIOLIN — does your oc play any instruments? what is their skill level (beginner/intermediate/advanced/virtuoso/etc)?
no one in the Elegy to the Desperate Stars crew plays any instruments, so i'm moving on to the guys in Requiem of the Breathing Worlds
Syphe loves music and learned a variety of instruments under the Wiroski's tutelage. he's classically trained in violin, viola and cello, as well as the piano. however, as the dramatic bitch he secretly is, his favorite is the organ
Dajsper was also classically trained by xir parents in the same instruments as Syphe against xir will, but managed to convince them to add flute to the roster. that one xe's surprisingly fond of
similarly, xir spouse Irami is also classically trained (rich kids smh) and holds a deep love for doublebass. y'know, the cello's big brother. absolutely gigantic instrument
Ideli also learned the violin, but really she plays it more like a fiddle to her uncle's delight (this family needs to stop bonding over acts of rebellion)
neither Meiviza nor Tumaril play any instruments, but you know who does? fucking Kea, that's who. like that bard stereotype he is, he plays the lute, the guitar, the harp, the lyre and the fiddle
hello !! what is an apology dajsper never recieved, but most needs to?
oh this is a heartbreaking question, Ori. this is evil
honestly? if i were to list all the things Dajsper deserves an apology for, i would be here for hours. xe is severely underestimated and underappreciated simply because xe puts on a bubbly "nothing can hurt me" persona and puts others above xemself so much
it's exactly why xir relationship with Tumaril is so important to xem, even if xe makes it into a lighthearted thing in front of others. Tumaril is the only person who ever told them "hey, my first impression of you was wrong and you're actually pretty cool, i am sorry for how i treated you at first" and then proceeded to treat xem better for all the following years, became a source of comfort and support and they became each other's hype-man, and that is so insanely important to Dajsper that xe considers Tumaril xir primary partner (even tho xe's married to Irami)
speaking of Irami, things have gotten better and they now work really well together and are really good for each other. however. they definitely still owe each other apologies from their engagement and early marriage. they're very much opposites and they could neither stand nor understand each other at the time, and even though they were in agreement over the marriage they really resented each other. they grew closer after through their love for the Underground and the toxicity of their families, but the insults from their early period linger
now, Meiviza and Ideli owe xem an apology for getting xem in trouble with Meiviza's adoptive mother. xe pretends not to care, but at the time Matron had been an Underground contact xe really needed to have. then xe found out how Matron treats Meiviza and started to want her as a contact a lot less, but it still stings that that is a ruined contact
Syphe owes Dajsper plenty of apologies for a variety of things. blaming xem for missions gone wrong, for incorrect info, for petty arguments, all small and insignificant things. they pile up though, and Syphe is someone that Dajsper considers as close as a brother. xe gave so much for Syphe, their literal freedom included, and every insult and blame and argument eats at xir self-worth
but what i think is the one apology xe needs the most is from xir parents. i can't even begin to list everything they've ever done, but i'll try
Dajsper's mother is a perfectionist. xir father has an insanely fragile ego. both of them are selfish and controlling people. for the majority of xir life, Dajsper was their puppet and nothing more. xe moved when they told them xem to move, said what they told xem to say, dressed the way they wanted xem to, did what they wanted xem to. xe was the perfect marionette. a genius, but not as much as xir father. beautiful, but not as much as xir mother. quiet. docile. an accessory to show off
xe was raised completely isolated and with no privacy. literally, xe's been in the public eye since xe was a baby, and in xir parents' house there were always cameras everywhere. xe was homeschooled until xe was 12, at which point xe was put in a huge private highschool (so three grades above people his age) and expected to both get along with people three years xir senior and be top of the class, but not too often because there was no way xe was that smart so if xe got good grades too often xe'd be accused of cheating
through all this xir parents were no help. if anything, they made things worse by pressuring xem to be social alongside fifteen and seventeen year olds from other rich socialite families and to ignore discomfort and danger in order to hang out with "the right people"
all in all, throughout xir childhood they completely destroyed Dajsper's mental health and sense of identity. so much so that Dajsper has horrible self-worth issues and self destructive tendencies (80% of his teen years were spent drunk & high & fucking strangers in shady Underground bars), terrifying anxiety attacks at the mere idea of imperfection (let alone failure) and ocd. and i mean ocd. not the quirky "i don't like it if my books are not in order 🤪", but the "can't drive because the second you sit behind the wheel your brain starts to whisper 'drive into the crowd' on repeat" kind. the kind you get frustrated at because why can't you just do things and will have a breakdown if you try to force it
and the worst part? this is the one apology xe knows xe'll never get. because xir parents are convinced they did a good job and set xem up for success, because in their mind success is family in high places and good business and net worth in the bilions, and the way you get there doesn't matter. not even if it destroys you
