Question: If Rhett & Link do manage to turn “The Lost Causes of Bleak Creek” into a TV show, who should play Rex and Leif?

Novels written by celebrities don’t exactly have a track record for being great, and for this reason The Lost Causes of Bleak Creek doesn’t start with a lot of expectations. Authors Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal, lifelong best buds and hosts of YouTube’s Good Mythical Morning decided to give novel writing a try. The result is this book, which is (mostly) successful.
Rex and Leif are growing up in a small North Carolina town (the titular Bleak Creek) along with their other best friend, Alicia. Rex, Leif, and Alicia have a camcorder and a dream to create an Oscar-worthy movie. But while filming a scene at a town pig-pickin’, an accident occurs and Alicia takes the blame. She’s sent to the local reform school, which has a history of sending kids back well-behaved but robotic and traumatized. Meanwhile, a twenty-something film student from New York is in Bleak Creek visiting her Grandmother and learns some creepy facts about the reform school. She, Rex and Leif team up to break Alicia out of the school and save the town from the headmaster’s big secret.
While the book is slow to start, about halfway through the excitement picks up and it becomes nearly un-putdownable. One of the blurbs for the book says it’s Stranger Things for the deep South, and that is an absolutely apt description. That said, the authors clearly had a great time making the main characters self-inserts, which is obvious to anyone who is familiar with their show. The book also takes place in the nineties, and some of the nineties references were really wedged in there. (The Hypercolor shirt, for example, didn’t move the plot along, nor did it give any characterization. It was just there because Hypercolor shirts were popular for a hot minute in the nineties.)
Still, Lost Causes is a fast and fun read and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone whether they follow Rhett and Link or not.
