Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Rex’s big ideas is one of the most noticeable things about him. He is always looking to challenge the constraints within society, either by petting a live cheetah in a zoo to prove animals aren’t to be chained up, having Jeannette write her homework using binary and Arabic numbers, or supporting a group of squatters in an abounded building in New York. He romaniticizes their way of life by telling the kids that they’re running away from bad guys every time they have to move. Rex’s Ne idealism leads to lots of disappointment within his family’s life as he can’t live up to his big ideas, like striking gold so he doesn’t need a permanent job or building the “Glass Castle” he promised them for so long. He is unable to hold down a long term job, choosing to continue moving to new places and having new experiences.

Introverted Thinking (Ti): Rex finds unique ways to rationalize events to his kids. Rather than get emotional when Brian and Jeanette burn down the shack, “Dad told us that zone was known in physics as the boundary between turbulence and order. “It’s a place where no rules apply, or at least they haven’t figured ‘em out yet”. He teaches lessons in a very blunt, logical manner - “If you don’t wanna sink, you better figure out how to swim”

Extroverted Feeling (Fe): Rex is very charming and manages to immediately win over the neighborhood kids and put others at ease. He sees Jeanette’s soft spot for him and abuses this by asking her for money and using her as a pawn at a bar, later claiming that he knew she could take care of herself as a means of justifying himself to her. Even when he acts in an abusive, drunken manner to Rose, they both wind up laughing and in love, because ultimately Rex’s wild ideas (Ne) and natural charm (Fe) makes it impossible for Rose to want to leave him.

Introverted Sensing (Si): Rex, like Rose, doesn’t have strong attachments to the past, yet he falls back into a self-destructive manner once he arrives back in Welch and it takes all of his kids leaving for him to finally leave his hated childhood home. He goes back to Rose even after is becomes obvious she has a negative effect on him.

Film Review | The Glass Castle

A really powerful exploration of familial relationships and how powerful they can be in how our lives turn out. The struggle of accepting all the safety and love a parent can provide, while reckoning with their personal struggles that children are witness to and effected by is the forefront of the emotional arcs for both Jeanette Walls and her father, Rex.

I didn’t realize this was based on a true story/memoir literally until the credits rolled. Due to that, I was a little disappointed in the story’s and Jeanette’s apparent reliance on male figures in her life to find her own actualization, especially as other characters around her just kept saying “You’re the strongest” and “You can do you” etc. But learning that this is based on real life kind of changes that a little bit - except for the inclusion of the fiancée character who ends up being this kind of father-daughter relationship barometer. Like, is he happy, so the marriage is fine? Or is he in ultimatum mode, so marriage is off, because family first? It’s a little strange.

Absolutely beautifully shot throughout but the camerawork raises up all the performances. Woody Harrelson does great wavering between tortured and inspirational in his mercurial drunk Rex Walls, and the rest of the cast, particularly Brie Larson and her younger selves as Jeanette Walls. Just excellent.

Please go see this and experience this great story. Or read the book, I know I probably will.

What does the “Glass Castle” represent to Rex Walls and his family?

The “Glass Castle” that Rex Walls continuously promises his family can have various interpretations. As a reader, the “Glass Castle” represents the empty promises of greatness that he regularly vowed his wife and children. “When Dad wasn’t telling us about all the amazing things he had already done, he was telling us about the wondrous things he was going to do. Like build the Glass Castle.” (Walls 25). The “Glass Castle” can also symbolize the concept of living in comfort and intensity as they move from town to town and escape or run from illegal activity and fraud. Rex’s “Glass Castle” represents hope as they lived on the brink of starvation. Moreover, the “Glass Castle” symbolizes Rex’s inability to care for his family - and constantly showers them with love and happiness regardless of how fragile and weak their lives they were living. These promises made by Rex helped him think that if he promised something so grand so beyond they would forget about how they are living and look forward to what can be. The “Glass Castle” is a prime example of how an individual’s diverse and unconventional upbringing may be the impedes that gives the main character the need to make a good life from herself different from what she knew. For example, Jeannette learned early on from her father to not only “dream big” but to chase your dreams by fulfilling them and to not allow your fears to hinder your dreams. “Pick out your favorite star,” Dad said that night. He told me I could have it for keeps... “You can’t give me a star!” I said. “No one owns the stars.” “That’s right,” Dad said. “No one else owns them. You just have to claim it before anyone else does...” (Walls 40). Rex uses the stars as a metaphor about her future dreams to relay to Jeannette that nobody can take away her version of her reality even if it begins as a fantasy.

The Glass Castle....Dad?

I'm crying. I'm crying hysterically. It's 2:29am and I just finished reading The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. Of all the books I've ever read in the past, this particular one resonated with me so strongly it put me to tears towards the end. These were tears filled with confusion, sorrow, and remembering the past. Jeanette Walls' father, Rex Walls, reminded me of my own father. Her upbringing in fact reminded me of my own except that my family was a lot better off. My Dad loved math, science and mechanics. He has his masters in Electrical Engineering (worked at AEP, made $145,00 a year) and loved tinkering with broken down cars in our garage. When I was young, he always played with us and took us everywhere. I recall back in the 4th grade he took the whole family to Disney World for Thanksgiving break. He was a very educated man that taught me code, economics, self-sustainability, and high school math that was well beyond my years. My teachers praised me for this rarity I had and placed me in the gifted program. In light of all his positive qualities, my dad did have some bad ones too. He was (and still is) an excessive drunk at times. Those were the scary times as a child. We would be very abusive and strike us kids...and it wasn't those strikes "out of love" as most parents say. He would also have very violent yelling matches with my mom when we were around.. my mom tried her best to shield us. I remember a time when he even lashed out physically at our mom. I also recall times when he tried to teach us math as he was drinking and would strike us when we couldn't understand the concept as fast as he wanted us too. His drunkenness made it hard for me to love him back then, to be honest I only said "i love you" to my dad out of fear. The abuse I received from him had me thinking of suicide at a young age of 11 and at that time all I had was hate for my father. Fast foreword into 7th grade, my mom finally had the strength to divorce my dad and take us kids with her out of the lavish house we all spent torture in. I never looked back since then..but after reading The Glass Castle I'm starting too. I have mixed feelings about my dad. Looking beyond the abuse, deep down he truly loved us kids... it was a tough love. He wanted us to be successful with the only way he knew how. And here I am crying my eyes out knowing that after the divorce this man tried to get back into my life to reconcile and I blocked him out of my life because of what I had to deal with him during my childhood. I remember opening the front door when he tried to visit during his visitation hours only to slam it hard in his face. I remember when he looked at my face behind the screen door how happy he was, approaching the door like he was going to give me a hug.. and I slammed the wooden door behind it in his face,,, on many occasions until he gave up on trying. Dad, I just didn't understand you at all growing up. I'm finally acknowledging all you've done for us... but I still don't know whether to say I love you nor rekindle whatever relationship we have left. We've been apart for so long and you haven't been in my life for years. How I feel about you now is just indifferent....

This divorce has so many questions left unanswered I'll never get.

I'm trying to seek out whats real and whats fake.

It takes two to equal a failed marriage.

You were not the only one at fault.

But thats a story for another time.

I wish.

While dad liked it that mom was bringing home pay checks, he saw himself as the money should be turned over to him.

This quote symbolizes Rex Walls as a father. Even though he enjoyed the fact his wife was bringing home paychecks, he didn’t realized that he wasn't being the man of the house. Therefore, he ordered his wife to give him the pay checks so he could think of himself as the provider. However doing this, caused problems because then he used the money for unnecessary things which meant no food in the house. In the end Rex wanted the family and himself to think of him as the a powerful man of the house, even if it meant they had to starve.
