My current and latest series - Battles for Peace - explores the fragility of our comfort as the state of the world changes rapidly. Ideas of imminent or sudden destruction is becoming more present in our societies and psyche. I pull imagery from World War II photographs as well as seemingly untouched landscapes around the world. My commentary imagines that there is no more surface of this earth - no more open space - that is uncontrolled by industry or political domination. Perhaps, also including our own inner selves.

That Which is Past, That Which is Now, pt II. February 1, 2016

Just before high tide I walked to the black sand beach of Skjálfandi Bay. Originally created by glacier activity, it now joins a glacier river as well as a freshwater salmon populated river into the northern Icelandic Ocean. The snow clouds were low and covered the Víknafjöll and Kinnarfjöll mountain ranges on the other side. I brought the two cotton sheets with my writings on it, and laid them in the ocean, I watched the waves cover and soak the sheets, then washed them in the tide as it swirled around my ankles. After I pulled them out, I lay them in the sand to let the salt do what it will. That night I sat in meditation releasing and contemplating the writings that were buried in the snow and facing the ocean. They stayed there all night and the next day. At dusk I pulled them inside to wash the sand off. The ink had spread and washed out as well, leaving weathered sheets reminiscent of my thoughts.

oh by the way this is my new blog. it's the art i love, like, am inspired by, and make (on occasion). Things i find interesting, and things that are changing the world. Hey let's all do that! raya darling is rhea cutillo. rhea cutillo is someone who contemplates ideas of freedom and wonders if true freedom is possible, or perhaps only in bliss.

Rhea Cutillo (b. Philadelphia, PA, summer solstice, 1987) is a multimedia artist and graduate of Mills College in Oakland, CA. She is interested in epistemic existence, both in the physical and immaterial realms, and aims to create immersive environments that are often slightly fantastical or surreal, but challenge the viewer to remove themselves from the concrete & obvious and journey to the abstract. She is inspired by the unknown and the idea of freedom, and is often moved by textural elements.
