Channel Live “Mad Ism” (1994)
Talking about Group Home reminded us of Channel Live, another rapper in that same late golden-era boat. Who goes up to bat in the first verse? KRS-One. He also produced most of Channel Live’s debut record Station Identification (1995) along with Rheji Burrell and Salaam Remi.
Firefall’s “Strange Way”, an unlikely find, was pitched down 8% to make “Mad Izm” but at the right speed to run with something more familiar: Lafayette Afro Rock Band’s “Hihache” (1973). Black Moon’s “I Got Cha Opin” (1993) was sampled and so was Boogie Down Production’s “The Bridge Is Over” for obvious reasons. Not just unforgettable samples that “Mad Izm” birthed, but also memorable lyrics, too. “Wake up in the mornin’ got the yearnin’ for herb”, “ like Lionel Richie, your whole style is bitchy“, “I come with notions deeper than the ocean”, “step up and test the skills, you can get my tes-ticules”. That and hearing Tuffy and Hakim’s distinct vocals and how smooth their syllables roll out makes you think how underappreciated “Mad Izm”.
