Firent! Rhianne only traveled outside of Firent as an adult. She loves her home deeply, but she also values changes of scenery.
You can read about Firent on the Arcana wiki, but I’ll sum it up here.
Firent is southeast of Vesuvia across the Salty Sea. It includes the island of Sirena where the ruler resides. Firent is ruled under a theocracy (government of religious leaders). The Papess of Firent (female pope) is pretty distrusting of outsiders. As a result, the nation is rather insular, which supposedly saved the country during the plague.
I’ve tried to find as much info as I could, but it’s sparse. I built the rest up in my head, but if I missed anything canon lmk!
I imagine Firent’s landscape and architecture to resemble ancient Greece with an ancient East Asian flare - high misty mountains, deep dark foliage, rich fields, colorful tapestry, stone buildings, upturned terra cotta roofs, etc. Firent values nature and builds around it. It’s not uncommon to see a tree growing through the middle of a shop. During travels, Rhianne often seeks out forests if she’s feeling homesick.
The people have similar attire to Vesuvia. They’re big on loose, layered clothes that’s cinched in with belts, sashes, and corsets. Firent loves their beads and metals, so lots and lots of ornate designs and jewelry. Men and women wear make-up, but it’s often tied to religious symbolism. Rhianne doesn’t change her style when outside of Firent. She’s eccentric and knows it and enjoys it. She prefers dark colors and layering delicate pieces of jewelry. While she doesn’t make a fuss of it publicly, she puts a lot of personal effort into her appearance. It’s a form of self-care that makes her feel sane.
Firent does have their own language, but it’s not uncommon to hear the universal language that’s used in Vesuvia. Rhianne speaks both since it was taught in school. Firent’s language is complex and deeply metaphorical, so it’s a nightmare to learn. This makes naming conventions rather longwinded, so many refer to themselves by a portion of their name. Typically, it’s the middle name, where the first name is reserved for closer relations. Rhianne follows this convention.
Years of exclusivity have birthed a bit of unhealthy nationalism in Firent society. The people tend to be prejudiced and rigid in upholding the culture and values. It’s to the point where natives themselves sometimes find assimilation to be difficult. Rhianne is one of those people.
Magic is practiced, but treated like a formal study and intertwined into the religion. It’s greatly regulated by the papess to prevent any exploration into the dark arts.
Naturally, Firent worships a god that is associated with good and linked to ‘light magic’, but there is a saying - there is no sun without the moon. Despite revering the light, Firent respects the existence of dark magic. Evil is to be properly acknowledged, otherwise it’s seen to be ignorant.
Consequently, there is one person elected to train and carry the knowledge of the dark arts. Despite the supposed prestige surrounding the sacrifice, this individual nonetheless faces stigma due to their ill fate.
