Riace, Calabria, Italy
The poor village of Riace, located on the Ionian coast of Southern Italy's Calabria, was a βghost townβ until it revived socio-economically by hosting refugees. The Mayor Lucano proposed the refugees should stay in the village and take over the abandoned homes.
The multiculturalism, the variety of skills and personal stories which people have brought to Riace have revolutionised what was becoming a ghost town.
Riace reconfigured the idea of immigration as a danger to tradition and challenged the European Union and Italian governmentβs interpretations of humanitarianism to distract attention from a migration-hostile environment.
