England People Very Nice
by Richard Bean
**
England People Very Nice is a play which deals with four waves of immigration from the 17th century to the modern-day. There are protests and struggles over housing and jobs in response to the integration of new cultures over time.
This play contains comedic elements, which at some points do indeed make you laugh out loud. However, it does also carry a close examination of the ways in culture can retaliate to change; a community that appears reluctant to embrace change in any way.
I loved Bean's decision that the same actors should be used to represent descendants within the different generations. It is a decision that allows for clear parallels between behaviours to be drawn throughout the time scale covered within the play.
However, I don't feel that I truly understood the decision to place the portrayal of these events within another play. This framing adds a somewhat disruptive element, as shown when the officers actively interrupt the scenes, potentially causing a level of confusion.
