Yesterday I had the great pleasure of creating portraits of renowned Spanish artist Jaume Plensa immersed in “Utopia” at @meijergardens. I enjoyed working with @richardgraygallery to make sure this monumental work was documented properly as well as capture Plensa in situ. “Utopia” defines the vast interior space in the institution’s new Welcome Center Garden Pavillion designed by Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, Plensa’s Utopia is comprised of four 20-by-90-foot carved marble portraits depicting the faces of Marianna, Julia, Laura, and Wilsis. Each of Utopia’s floor-to-ceiling portraits utilizes the human form to symbolize the capacity for a shared humanity. In the words of the artist, “Utopia is our human landscape, a space to embrace humanity and our collective dreams.” Assisted by @markandrus of @themoongr (see photo #2…that dude can walk through any photo.) #jaumeplensa #utopia #richardgraygallery (at Grand Rapids, Michigan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CW6rvcUrkGF/?utm_medium=tumblr
