Hommage à Robbie Robertson, décédé hier.

Je viens de passer un long moment sur Discogs à regarder les différents macarons de ce disque au fil des ans et des pays. Et à constater également combien la pochette iconique d'Elliott Landy a été conservée partout telle quelle (une seule exception, le Mexique). Comme quoi, la force d'une photo et sa mise en page simple mais efficace, dépasse les clivages culturels. Le groupe apparaît sur la photo comme un simple groupe d'homme qui pourraient revenir des champs, il y,à 50 ans, 80 ans, 100 ans, 150 ans... on ne sait pas. Ils pourraient aussi être des soldats d'une armée du Nord ou du Sud, ayant connu des années de conflits qui se lisent sur leurs visages. Sont-ils encore sur la ligne de front, ont-ils déserté ? On ne saurait le dire. Sont-ils les amis d'un marié revenant de la noce, débraillés et encore un peu ivres ? Allez savoir... Tous ces possibles rendent ce cliché magnétique : on n'en détourne pas les yeux sans avoir tenté de sonder l'énigme.

Et le disque ? Oh, ce disque est simplement l'un de ceux qui reviennent sans cesse sur ma platine, en vinyl, en CD... Un de ces classiques qui vous collent à la peau dès la première écoute, plus encore que "Music From Big Pink", son prédécesseur. Un disque fondateur sur lequel toute l'Americana (que l'on l'appelait pas encore comme ça à l'epoque) repose. Un disque qui fait la synthèse de toutes les musiques traditionnelles du Nord des Amériques. Un disque dont le sillon a généré des graines depuis 50 ans aujourd'hui, peut-être autant que le premier Velvet Underground ou que "Fun House". Un disque terrien comme ces deux-là sont citadins. Campagnard et villageois comme le sang qui coulait encore dans les veines jusqu'à cette génération qui a connu la fin du XXème siècle. Un disque de tourbe, de foin coupé, de bois qui craque dans la cheminée, de whisky de contrebande, de chants d'église et de fête au village.

Un disque essenciel. La faute est voulue.
