Tim Robbins later recalled that when Bob Roberts was struggling to secure financing, he sent the script to Alan Rickman hoping he’d say yes. Alan loved it and joined the project. Robbins later said simply:

“Alan saved the film.”

Alan Rickman photographed by John Cole at the top of London's OXO Tower in 2011, in support of the Wembley to Soweto photography charity. Founded by David Westhead and John Cole, the initiative provided photography training and life skills to disadvantaged young people from Johannesburg townships. Alan was a dedicated supporter of the project, and the 2011 exhibition at Gallery@OXO showcased photographs created by its trainees.
