••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
It was another long day at work. Customers were jerks and I didn’t even get to go on my lunch break today. I was exhausted and hungry.
I trudge my way out of the mall and into the parking lot. I find my car and get in. I let my head rest on the steering wheel as I let out a groan mixed with frustration and exhaustion. I run a hand through my hair with a sigh and start the car.
The drive home wasn’t easy. People drove like morons and some idiot almost side swiped me. It seemed my bad day was only getting worse.
Finally, I arrive home and pull into the driveway. Ricky was still at the studio with the guys and wouldn’t be home for a couple of hours. I turn off the car and grab my purse and get out of my car. I walk up to the door and dig in my purse for my keys.
“Damn it, where are they?” I grumble, getting more annoyed as I can’t find my keys. “Fuck, come on!”
Eventually after some digging, I find my keys and unlock the door. I get in and throw my bag to the side. I go to the couch and sit, soon to slump against it.
I was tired.
Mentally, and physically tired.
I could feel tears prick my eyes as I hugged one of the pillows. Today was a rough day, and all I wanted to do was cry.
So, that’s what I did. I let the tears run down my face as I hugged the pillow closer, shoving my face into it. I wished it was Ricky. Ricky always made everything better.
But he wasn’t here. He was working. All I wanted was for him to comfort me, and I couldn’t have that. Not for a couple of hours. Now I was sobbing.
I don’t know how long I was crying, but I heard the front door open. I didn’t bother to acknowledge whoever it was, I really didn’t give a damn. I just hug the pillow and keep my head down as I hear the sound of footsteps. I had cried so much that my voice was tired.
“Sweetheart? You home?” Ricky’s voice calls as he gets closer. I don’t answer.
Ricky finally approaches me, and frowns when he finds me like this. He crouches down to my level and gently takes my face.
“Baby, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?” He asks softly, his voice filled with worry.
“Bad day…really bad day..” I mutter, my voice on the verge of cracking.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
I shake my head in response. Ricky nods. “That’s perfectly okay. Have you eaten yet?”
Shit. Ricky hated whenever I didn’t get the chance to eat. I gulp and look away. Ricky frowns again.
“I’m going to take that as a no.” He says with a sigh, then places his hand on my leg. “You need to eat, sweetheart.”
“Not hungry..” I mumble. That was a lie. I was starving, but I didn’t want to get up and eat.
“Uh uh. We’re not doing that. You need to eat.” Ricky stands. “Here’s what we’re gonna do. You’re gonna go take a nice shower while I make food, change into comfy clothes and then we’re gonna have a movie marathon on the couch. I’m not letting you be sad.”
That actually sounded pretty nice. I nod and sit up, rubbing my eyes. Ricky extends his hand and I take it as he helps me up. He walks with me to the bathroom and places his hands on my shoulders.
“Just relax, okay? Take your time while I cook pasta. I know it’s your favorite.”
My eyes light up a little. “Thanks Rick..”
Ricky smiles and presses a kiss to my forehead. “Of course baby, you deserve the best. Now go shower, okay?”
“Mhm..”
Ricky pulls away and leaves the bathroom so I can shower. I undress and turn on the shower. I end up taking a nice, long everything shower using all of my favorite smelling products. It made me feel a bit better.
I step out of the shower in my towel and walk into the bedroom. I put on my favorite body lotion and put my hair in a jaw clip. I change into comfy clothes and leave the bedroom.
When I walk into the kitchen, the smell of cooked pasta greets me. Ricky was almost done. I walk up behind him and wrap my arms around his torso, nuzzling my face into his back. Ricky turns his head and looks down at me with a smile.
“Hey beautiful. Have a nice shower?”
“Mhm…”
“Good. Dinner’s ready, go sit.”
I nod and let go of Ricky, a little sad to let go due to him being so warm, and smelling good too. I go to sit at the table.
Ricky plates the pasta and walks over, setting a plate down in front of me. I pick up my fork and waste no time devouring my pasta.
Ricky smiles as he watches me eat. “So much for not being hungry, huh?” I hum in response as I finish my first plate. I happily get up to grab another.
“You always make it just the way I like it, thank you.” I say as I sit back down, picking my fork up again and eating.
“It’s no trouble, really. I knew it would make you happy. It’s easy to make as well.”
We finish eating and Ricky sets the dishes aside in the sink, saving them for later. He grabs my hand and leads me over to the couch. He pulls me with him to cuddle. He sits me in his lap and wraps his arms around me. I lean into him, resting my head against his shoulder.
“You didn’t have to do this for me, Rick..” I say softly as he turns on the tv.
“I wanted to, baby. I never want to see you sad.” Ricky says as he settles on a movie, sets the remote down, and pets my hair. “It makes me sad seeing you upset.”
I nestle into him, nuzzling my face into his tattooed neck. “You always know what to say, and how to make me feel better. I love you..”
Ricky presses a kiss into my hair and pulls me closer. “I love you too, sweetheart. I’m always here for you.”
“You’re the best.”
We spend the rest of the night cuddling on the couch and watching movies until I end up falling asleep. Ricky carries me into our shared bedroom and lays me down on the bed. He pulls the covers over me and kisses my forehead. He lays on his side and wraps an arm over me. It isn’t long until he’s asleep as well.
He always made everything better.
I'll Be Home For Christmas - Ricky Angst
AN: I am really proud of how this one came out, I genuinely love it! Thank you for the request @tearfallpixie ! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
“What do you mean that you won’t be here in time for Christmas?! This is why I didn’t want you to book a flight home on fucking Christmas eve?”
You want to yell, to scream out your frustration and grief towards your boyfriend, who is telling you yet again that he is missing something important to you but instead you find yourself getting quieter, almost in a whisper as you fight back your tears from his news.
“You-you promised me that you would be home for Christmas after having to miss our anniversary, my birthday, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. Rick, you fucking promised me,” you mumble, lip trembling as you try to keep your tears back.
“I know I did baby, we’re all currently trying to figure out how to get home. It’s not our fault that the flight was canceled, it just happens unfortunately. In fact Chris is currently fighting with someone trying to figure out what the fuck we can all do to get home. Ryan, Vin, Chris and I were all booked on this flight and are stuck here. I know I promised you to be back for your favorite holiday, I’m so fucking sorry and wish I could do more right now,” you can hear the remorse and frustration in his voice, that he was just as upset as you are.
You let out a sigh before responding, “It’s part of being with you, I have to accept that, I am working on accepting that, but it’s hard Rick it is really hard.”
“I know baby, I know. At least we are taking time off after the holidays for our next album so I will be home for a while,” he says, sounding sad as well which just makes you feel worse.
“Yeah, I hope you make it home soon. Rick, I’ve got to go, mom is calling me,” you say softly. “I love you.”
“I love you too baby, I’ll keep you updated,” he answers before hanging up.
Your mother isn't really calling, you just need to end the call before you say something that you will regret during your emotions at the time. You have to take some time to think about what is going on in your mind before you speak about it, not wanting to take your frustrations out on your boyfriend.
You make your way to your bed, laying down on his side before you give in, letting your tears finally escape your eyes as a couple sobs escape as it all finally hits you. Grief from missing him so much the last couple months Anger because he is missing another important thing. Anger because he promised you and broke it. Frustration from spending your favorite holiday alone. But most important, and probably the hardest thing is the loneliness that you feel.
Your anger winds up winning as everything runs through your head, angry at yourself for trusting his words when he has failed you before. And angry at yourself because he failed at keeping his promise.
You groan in annoyance, getting up and finding yourself in your living room. Glaring at all the decorations that are mocking you, at the tree you had to decorate yourself this year. You let out a growl before you begin ripping all of the ornaments off the tree, crying and frustrated. Letting a couple break as you drop them while throwing them in a bag so you can be rid of the thing. When that is done you tear the tree back down, taking it and the ornaments back down into the basement. You wind up taking everything down in a fury, pissed off and annoyed and hurt. So fucking hurt, you debated going home with your family but he fucking promised you.
You thought taking everything down would make you feel better, because then you wouldn’t have to sit and look at them when you know you won’t enjoy your Christmas now.. But instead it has made everything feel more real, breaking your heart even more as you sit on the floor where your tree once stood bawling, questioning if your love for Rick will always be enough to get you through the loneliness and heartbreak that you feel so deep.
Meanwhile
Chris walks back to the group, looking a little less pissed off than he was when he went up to the poor lady working the desk, but also frustrated.
“Okay, I got somewhere with her, we may still have a chance at getting home. The airline has a flight to Philadelphia that leaves in 6 hours out of an airport that is a 4 hour drive away and she was able to get the four of us on it. So if we can get a rental car, drive to the other airport in time, take the flight we would land in Philly at about 2 in the morning and would all get home around 430 if we can get someone to meet us at that airport to drive us home. So let’s all start calling all the rental car places around here and see if we can find one last minute on a holiday and make this happen,” Chris says, giving a hopeful smile to his bandmates and friends.
Rick lets out a sigh, praying to a god he doesn’t believe in that they can somehow make this happen and get home for Christmas before pulling out his phone and starting to make calls.
They have no luck and now 15 minutes later Ryan is calling the last place, all feeling defeated and awful when he finally has a breakthrough.
“I’ve got one, it’s a car so we will be cramped with all of us and our luggage but it’s better than nothing. They are holding it for me so let’s get a taxi and get there before its too late,” he exclaims, getting up from his seat.
Everyone cheers, thankful that they finally found something that will work, hoping everything goes as planned and despite the fact they’ll all be exhausted they will finally be on their way. Eventually getting to the rental place and now on their way, Ryan drives.
Everyone’s moods have lifted at the prospect that they may have pulled this off and be home in time to be with their families.
While sitting in the car headed towards the new airport Rick’s mind wanders towards you, he tried calling you but you didn’t answer him. He hopes that you are alright, able to hear you trembling when you speak and it really hurts him to know that you were hurting, especially when he feels like it is all his fault. But the part that killed him the most, that broke his own heart was when you said that it was part of being with him, that you have to accept that. He honestly hates that he puts you through that, it is hard on him but he knows it is worse on you because you are stuck at home alone when he is off. You had moved away from your family for him, so you are truly alone and he feels awful that he might not even be there for you at the holidays. He would do anything if he knew he could erase all your pain and grief, but he knows he can’t.
He hopes that you aren’t taking it too badly, that you will be happy when he surprises you in the morning. He also selfishly hopes that you are sleeping when he arrives home, that you will wake up and find him in your bed and get the gift he knows that you want the most this year, himself.
Back To You
You find yourself sitting on the couch, feeling a little numb as you continue to look around the room at the emptiness. You and Rick should be getting home from the airport about now and instead you are sitting here, waiting for him to arrive but knowing he probably won’t tonight, which brings you back to your sorrow.
You had things all planned for tomorrow, knowing he would be tired and sleep in, you planned to make a big breakfast for him in bed with all his favorites, but not until later in the day. The two of you would have a lazy day, watching movies curled up together before enjoying a nice dinner. You had already picked up both his and your favorite Christmas movie from the store, had bought everything, hell you even got some new lingerie for that night once the two of you were relaxed and ready to ahem spend time together. You had everything figured out for a nice holiday and now you are alone.
Your mother even begged you to come home for the holiday and you said no because you wanted a nice time with Rick, being his first day home from tour and now you wasted what could be a nice trip home.
You get a call from him but you don’t answer it, given the time you figure it is bad and that you’ll be disappointed all over again, plus you just don’t want to for a moment, needing this time to figure out what you want.
You finally give up, deciding that you want to go to bed and forget about everything. You can deal with this tomorrow, maybe if you are lucky he will be home tomorrow night and it won’t be a complete waste of the day.
The Next Morning
Rick finally arrives home around 5 in the morning, thanks to Vinny's mom who spent her night picking them up from the airport and giving everyone a ride to their houses. He makes sure to give her a smile and huge hug as thanks before grabbing his bag and making his way up the walkway. He lets out a huff, before trying his hardest to unlock the door quietly so that he doesn’t wake you up. He stops in his tracks when he notices that there is no tree up, no decorations anymore, and he knows how much time you spent putting everything up. You facetimed him the entire time to try and make him still feel like he had a part in it with you. He sighs in disappointment before making his way into the bedroom to be with you.
His heart breaks when he sees you sleeping on his side of the bed, holding his pillow to your chest. He can tell that you were crying, your eyes slightly red and puffy in your sleep. He shuffles out of his jeans and shirt, quietly sliding on a pair of sweatpants to sleep in before laying down behind you and wrapping his arm around you, smiling when you instinctively roll over and nuzzle your face in his neck but not waking up.
When you wake up around 9 you are confused at first, you can tell someone is holding you before you even open your eyes. You shoot up, concerned that someone has broken in, or who knows what but then you notice it is Rick and can’t help the excited squeal that escapes your mouth.
You can’t believe he made it on time, he told you he wouldn’t and you thought you would be alone. You just watch him sleep for a while, not wanting to move and risk waking him up because you know he had to have arrived late. But also because you can’t believe that he is currently home, in bed with you.
He stirs after a while, slowly stretching before opening his eyes and looking at you where you lay curled up in his side. Rather than speaking he moves some of your hair, which is a mess from sleeping, out of your face before leaning in and giving you a soft kiss, both of you lingering in the kiss, not wanting to separate after finally seeing you for the first time in a long time before he finally sleepily pulls away with a smile.
“Merry Christmas Y/N,” he says quietly, neither of you moving nor having the desire to. He just gave you your favorite Christmas gift, himself, and you couldn’t be happier to be laying here with him, having a lazy morning. It may not have been the big breakfast and everything you had originally planned but this? This is better.
If you feel like it for 13 days of Halloween can i ask for a fic on just walking through a Graveyard with Ricky to see if he gets any ghost content for his channel?
DAY 9
Pairing: Ricky Olson X Reader
CW: mentions of the supernatural
Ricky had found the graveyard towards the beginning of tour and planned to go visit it on an off day since it might make for good content for his ghost hunting videos, but also sounded like it could be a lot of fun.
The images on Google showed some very beautiful and intricate statues and graves which was something the both of you were keen on seeing regardless of any super aural presence.
Ricky had brought his filming equipment whilst you walked beside him with an EMF reader.
You both took it in turns asking questions, but nothing happened.
You didn’t really mind about the lack of activity since it was a beautiful graveyard and the autumn leaves on the ground made for some good photographs which you later uploaded to your photography profile on Instagram.
Ricky had wandered off talking to the camera as he often did, leaving you alone looking at a beautiful angel statue in the centre of the graveyard.
Something you liked about this graveyard was how there was no negative energy that you could sense. It felt almost peaceful there. The graveyard was quiet, but not an eerie quiet, a calm quiet. The kind that made you feel… content.
After giving up on the video entirely, Ricky took your hand and you both walked around just looking at the graves and the various inscriptions.
Some had lines of poetry while others had bible quotes on.
Some had song lyrics while others simply had the name of the person it belonged to.
Regardless of the lack of activity, being in that quiet graveyard with Ricky gave you a sense of calm that was much needed after being trapped in a bus with his bandmates.
Especially when you arrived back to Vinny’s insanely awful attempt at cooking a chicken chow mein.
The poor guy had put in far too much soy sauce and gasses the entire tour bus with the smell.

Sidebar this is one of my favourite songs so I loved writing this for you <3
You were aware Ricky was looking at you, but you didn't pay any mind to it.
He smiled softly at you as you laughed at a shitty joke Vinny had told, loving how you got on with his friends.
You looked back at him, smiling delicately as your eyes shone.
That's when he knew.
No words were needed in that moment.
You knew how he felt.
He knew how you felt.
Ricky spent the rest of that evening wishing on every last star in the night sky that you never stopped looking at him like that.
It was his favourite thing ever.
And you never did.
In that moment, you had made a vow to yourself that you would never stop looking at him like that.
The Scavenger Hunt - Clue 1: Where We First Met
“Hey, thank you for helping me today with this project I am working on… actually, I lied to you and in all actuality I am here to help you with a project that you have to do today. I’m sorry I am making you get up so early but there is a lot for us to do today and I wanted to make sure that you have time. Go put on this dress and your jacket, plus some comfortable shoes because we are going to be busy almost all day,” you sister says.
She all but shoved her way into your house today, telling you that you need to stop moping over Ricky being gone and get out of the house to do something with her. And while you are really confused, can’t figure out what the fuck is going on or what project she might be talking about you doing, but you know that telling her no is never an option and she will get her way, so you let out a defeated sigh before stepping into your bedroom to get changed into the dress that she gave you with.
When you walk back out she has a big smile on her face, pulling you into a hug before letting go and looking at you. “Okay, let me do your hair and make up first, make you adorable and then we will be on our way. I promise this will all make sense soon, just trust me okay?”
“Yeah, okay,” you conceded, taking a seat where she wants you at and letting her begin to curl your hair for you.
“I wonder what is up with Rick today, usually he sends me a good morning message when he is gone by now, and I haven’t gotten one today,” you say softly, trying to make conversation with your sister.
She pauses her movements for a second, making you glance at her before she starts working on your hair again, wanting to keep you from figuring out that something is up and that’s why he didn’t.
“I bet he just slept in after a late night, it is only 8 in the morning,” she says quickly, almost too quickly. Something is up, you may not know what but you can tell that something is going on.
“What are you hiding from me?” You ask her, trying to use your stern voice but she just ignores you, humming and pretending to not hear you speak. You want to question her, but you know that she wouldn’t tell you unless she is ready so instead you just sit there in the quiet.
“When does he come home again? It is coming up soon isn’t it?” Kayla asks you, the silence starting to bother her and she is worried if she doesn’t keep talking that she might spill something she shouldn’t to you.
“Tomorrow, I am so ready. It has been months since he has been home this time, I miss him so much. You’d think it gets easier the more we are together but it never does,” you say sadly, glancing down for a moment to regain your composure. “He’s worth it though, really.”
“Yeah, I must say he treats you well which is all that matters,” she squeezes your shoulder softly before moving so she can start on your makeup.
Within a couple minutes she is done and you move to get your jacket out of your room, wanting to stay warm in the cool spring weather while you do whatever it is you are doing, you aren’t too sure what that is supposed to be but she’s gotta tell you soon right?
When you step back out into the living room she is standing there, holding a rose out towards you with a smile on her face.
“This is for you, and the note with it will explain everything, I promise. Now why don’t you read it so that we can get going, I’m getting impatient but I promised I would make sure you look nice for this,” she says, almost giggling like a toddler as she hands you the rose and a letter with a smile.
My Personal Nancy Drew,
I know that by now you are confused, trying to figure out what Kayla is up to as she gets you dressed and ready for the day. Hopefully she has not spilled it by now, I am going to assume she didn’t.
Let me start by saying that you will see me when you finish your scavenger hunt, that you will find me at the end when you find all the clues and solve the puzzles that I have left for you at each location. I know that you love having to figure things out, which is why I always joke that you are my personal Nancy Drew, so I have left a trail of clues for you and you have to figure them out so you know where to go next. You will know that it is right when you tell someone the correct thing, and they give you your next rose with the next clue.
Each rose will have something that I love about you tied to the stem so that when you are done, you have 12 reasons why I love you and a note, carrying you on to the next place. Some clues may be easier than others, but I am hoping that as you go through the puzzles that you will enjoy the walk down memory lane that they give you.
So to get started it will be simple, where did we first meet? When you get there you need to find a special, and if you tell the lady at the counter the correct one she will give you the next clue. I know that one is easy, but you will have to search to find out what the correct special is, and I know once you do that you will be able to tell that it is correct.
So get on your way, start your adventure and I will see you soon, but hopefully not too soon.
I love you,
Ricky.
You look down at the rose, looking at the little tag on the stem that reads “I love how you always support me and my dreams, many times in ways that I could never imagine you would.”
You turn and look at your sister with a smile, giving her a hug to thank her for her part in this, though you are unsure how much of a part she actually has in this. But the fact that she is taking part in it, that she is helping with this means a lot to you, more than she probably knows.
“Thank you, I know where we need to go. Are you ready?” You ask her, moving to grab your purse before the two of you leave.
“Of course I am, if you know where we are going,” she says with a smile, following you out of the door, both of you going to her car. “We need to go to the Blackbird Coffee House, that is where we met the first time.”
“Did you two bump into each other or something that day? All I remember is you told me about this beautiful man that you met,” she teases, as she begins the short drive to the coffee shop that you told her to go to.
“Yeah, so I was sitting at a table reading and he noticed the book I was reading and asked me a question about it. We wound up talking for almost an hour before we realized how long it had been. We exchanged phone numbers and stayed in contact, mostly about books at first until we were hanging out one night and he finally told me that he really liked me and asked me on a date. I had no clue that studying at the coffee shop would have ever led me to meet someone but I am glad it did,” you said with a smile. Remembering that day dearly, one of the best days of your life if you were being honest.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have asked, I didn’t expect the answer to be so sickeningly sweet. Gross. Anyways, we're here. Let’s go in and figure out what the special he is talking about is,” she says, shutting the car off before you both get out.
When you walk in you are greeted with a smile by the barista at the counter, which you return before your eyes scan the specials board. Trying to find anything that catches your eye on it, that might make sense of a clue. A few moments later you realize that some letters in the specials list are a different color and when you put them all together they spell Ricky Special.
You turn towards the barista, a smile on your face as you ask her for the Ricky Special.
“I was wondering when you would show up and ask for it, these are for you. And what can I get you to drink ladies, I was told to make sure you both have a drink before you leave, on the house. What would you like?” She smiles as she hands you the rose with a piece of paper.
You let her know what you want when you start to read the tag on the rose, this one reading “I love that you comfort me like you do, make all my problems melt away while with a simple hug.”
The barista hands you both your drinks as you sit down on the table so that you can read the letter that was left here for you to your sister, tell her what the next clue is.
Baby,
You figured out the first clue, I am so proud of you but you are only just beginning.
It only made sense to start you here, because this is where our story started. Where we first met each other. When I had to leave and get back on the bus because we were starting tour I already knew that you were it for me. You can ask the boys, I told them all about what you looked like and how we talked about the book that day. I’m pretty sure they wanted to kill me, but they dealt with it.
We spent that entire tour talking, getting to know each other. I was so glad when you agreed to go for a walk with me when we finished that tour a month and a half later, I knew that I was going to ask you on a proper date that night after I told you how I felt about you, and that is where you need to go next. Go to the park where we confessed that we liked each other for the first time. There will be a puzzle set up for you there that will give you the next clue and answer.
I love you and can’t wait for you to keep going, enjoy the weather and the memories.
See you soon,
Ricky
The Scavenger Hunt - Ricky Olson Master List and Intro
AN: Enjoy this teaser of a story that I am starting to write, expect nothing but emotional fluff and cuteness!
“Hey Kayla, I need your help with something. But you can’t tell y/n about it, I want your help with proposing to her, call me when you get the chance please,” Rick sends the message to your sister, knowing that if he is going to pull this off how he wants to she needs to help walk you through everything.
You should be able to figure it out yourself but he wants you to have someone to talk the answers through, help you with ideas as you think about what you need to do next. And while his friends are helping him with the rest of it, he needs her help on your end.
About an hour later his phone rings, and when he notices the name on the screen he lets out a sigh before answering, glad that it is Kayla. “Hey, thank you for calling me back. Are you game for helping me?”
“Of course but don’t I have to know what I am helping you with before I can answer for sure?” She asks, teasing the man, but also because she loves getting under his skin. It is something that she has always excelled in, has made it her mission to annoy him as much as she has always done to you… and has succeeded at.
“I want to make it a puzzle, do a scavenger hunt type thing. So you would give her the first rose, which would have a note and clue tied to the stem for her to read. Once she figures out what the first clue is that would lead her to where the next rose is. One of the guys or our friends would be there to give her the next one, and it would continue until she is given the 12th one. The last one would tell her where I am and that would be where I finally ask her. I would like you to stick with her the entire day and not answer her where to go but be there for her to talk the clues out with, to figure out what to do or where to go. Plus you are so close I want you to be part of the day, if I keep you in the loop will you do this for me? For us?” Rick asks, letting out a soft sigh while he listens to your sister's line, which is silent as she processes what he asks.
“I would love to help, you tell me when and where to be and we will do it. That is such a sweet way to ask her, perfect for her as much as she loves figuring puzzles out. She is going to love this, and I would be honored to have a part in this. Let me know what all you need help with and I will get started with it,” your sister answers, even though Rick can’t see it he knows that there is a huge smile on her face. Your entire family has been pressuring him for a while to ask you, so he knows that she is excited about this.

“So where are we going?” your sister asks you, both of you making your way back to her car ready to go to the next place that you need to go.
“The arcade, I think? We were planning on a restaurant together but when we went there they lost the reservation somehow so we wound up wandering around for a while downtown until we came across the arcade. We wound up playing games and ordering garbage fried food, but it was fun. We made the best of it despite the fact that it was not what we wanted it to be,” you answer, another smile making its way across your face. “Rick was so disappointed that it didn’t work out, and I could tell. He likes things a certain way so when it didn’t work out he was upset, I thought for sure the date was ruined and wouldn’t end well with the mood he was in but we fixed it. He apologized all night long that we didn’t get to do what he had planned but I loved what we did regardless. That is where the ducky nickname came from, we picked out a small duck from the prize stand.”
“This is fun, getting to hear all these memories with you from your past with Ricky, I am glad he asked me to be a part of this with you. Did you two do anything else that night or just that?” She asked you, giving you a small look before turning back towards the road.
“That was it, he planned only dinner so we had nothing else going on when that didn’t work. We just played the games for a while and then wound up back at my apartment, watching a movie. It was nice, I actually prefer that it was something we did together. He concentrated quite a bit when he was playing, trying to beat the scores. It was really cute, I love that look on him,” you say, watching out the window as she pulls into the arcade parking lot.
You both step out of the car and make your way into the building, being greeted right away by the prize attendant and Vinny, who is standing there with a smile when you both walk in.
“I’m getting the feeling you all are in on this aren’t you?” You ask him, letting him give you a hug before he pulls your sister into one. Her blushing brightly as they both lingered for a moment, you’ll have to ask her about that later.
“Yeah, you’re going to see all of us at least once today. Anyways, I just bought tokens from this wonderful woman and am not allowed to let you back towards the prize desk until you have gotten a score of 250 on skeeball. And Ricky said you suck at skeeball so we better get started on it,” Vinny says, leading the two of you away towards the game where you let out a groan.
“That is going to be damn near impossible, she has always been garbage at it. Be prepared to watch her fail for a while Vin,” you sister teases, watching you start your first game.
You throw the balls and despite aiming at the 50 you keep getting 10 and 20 points, making your final score a pathetic 170 points, you pouting as you put in the token to try again… and again, failing miserably.
“I’m going to message Rick and tell him this is going awfully, ask if he has a back up plan for this,” Vinny mumbles, pulling his phone out of his pocket after watching you try for almost an hour. “Okay, he said that they will also accept 150 tickets from the machine, whichever you hit first so lets count where you are at.”
Him and your sister count your tickets as you continue to try, doing better but still not quite hitting the 250 mark you need to, your highest score being 230.
“You are at 125 tickets, so if we play a couple more times we should be able to make it. Hopefully it won’t be too hard, sorry, we need to keep this going and that’s probably going to be the easiest way. That is kind of mean, making you play a game that you suck at,” Vinny says, nudging your side and making you glare at him.
“It's a joke between us, that night I kept getting mad because he was kicking my ass at it. We played skeeball alone for almost an hour that night as well because I was determined I would beat him and nope. My stubborn ass wanted to keep trying but the arcade was closing,” you explained as you continued the game.
“That does sound like something you would do, have you both come back so you could try and redeem yourself?” Vinny asks you, watching as you still continue to fail at hitting any decent numbers.
“Fuck no, I wasn’t going to let him kick my ass again. Rather avoid it than admit he defeated me,” you respond, rolling your eyes as you throw in another token.
“That also sounds like you,” your sister says with a laugh, standing behind you as she continues to watch as well.
You finally get enough tickets with your last game you played and take them up to the desk, handing them to the lady who is working the prize desk with a smile.
“I take it you never hit the score so you had to ticket yourself out?” She asks with a laugh. “I was warned you might be here for a while by the gentleman who brought me your prize. Here it is,” she says, handing you a letter and a rose.
Ducky,
I thought for sure that after the dinner reservation mess you would leave, that you wouldn’t want to continue the date with the guy who messed up when the reservation was. When you suggested that we just walk around and find something else to do, grabbing my hand and leading me as you walked around the downtown area it filled me with joy. That is what you always do, look at the brighter side of life and make the best of things.
When we came across this arcade I was worried it was going to be a bad decision, that you wouldn’t enjoy it because it was childish. But somehow you read my thoughts and decided that is where we had to go, to play games like we were young teenagers on a first date again, eating shitty fried food that would give us both stomach aches as we played and laughed the night away.
My favorite part is when you insisted you’d beat me at this god forsaken game, one that I always thought I sucked at but you….yikes. Despite the fact that you kept losing you continued to laugh, to play with me and insist that my time was coming until we got the warning almost an hour into playing that game that the arcade was closing soon. When we cashed in the tickets and you told me what to get you I have no clue what possessed me to get the stuffed duck, but I did. And I love that you still have it, that it sits in our bedroom. That you told me you want to give it to our first baby when we have one so that the memory can continue to live on, that you are my ducky.
The night didn’t end how either of us expected, or wanted it to but we still had a blast and by some miracle you agreed to another date. I’m so glad you gave me that chance, that you still give me that chance.
Because I know I tortured you with that game… and Vin and Kayla by making them watch you suffer with the game I will be nice and give you the next location without a puzzle this time. I want you to go to where we first kissed, because for some reason I was too nervous to kiss you on our first date and waited until our second.
Keep going baby, I love you
Ricky
“Is it bad I kind of want to go with you the rest of the way because I am curious about all of the puzzles, one of you will have to tell me about them. Good luck,” Vinny says, walking the two of you to your car, both your sister and you getting in.
“Where are we going now?” Your sister asks you, watching you closely as you take your seat. She could tell you we’re getting emotional at this point, not that it was a bad thing. The memories are just really taking hold on you, really mean a lot and to be reliving so many is important to you and you are loving it.
“City park,” you answer looking at the rose you just received with a smile.
“I love that you are always ready for new adventures, to always find something new and exciting in everything we do.”
