First Surfboards - Mickey Munoz - "It was called a Surf King Junior, a 10-6 hollow plywood paddleboard, made by Tom Blake. It was in 1948 and cost about 50 dollars. Bob Burns, a lifeguard friend at Will Rogers State Beach, helped me glue a fin on it. We made it out of the back of apple crates, an elongated half-moon fin. We doweled it and glued it. I really learned to surf inside the breakwater at Santa Monica Harbor. Ricky Grigg was my best friend and really did motivate me. He lived right at Muscle Beach, and I'd go down after school. I don't remember what happened to it; I'm sure I kept it for a while because I'm a packrat by nature." from Action Sports Retailer, vol. 9, Sept 1988 #shaccphotoarchive #mickeymunoz #tomblake #rickygrigg #shacc #surfmuseum #sanclemente #firstboards (at Surfing Heritage & Culture Center)
