​The Head Coach and the Starting Quarterback - Here's a photo from inside the offices of SURFER Magazine. Head Coach Steve Pezman on the left looking over possible magazine photos with his Starting Quarterback Art Brewer. These impromptu discussions from two future Hall of Fame members were what made SURFER the 'Bible of the Sport" and resulted in magazine sales of more than 100,000 copies per month. This adaptation of the prevailing mode of travel in India to Southern California beach use came about through a speed dressing contest in which the young lady atop the surfboard changed from street costume to bathing attire seven seconds more rapidly than her defeated companions. It's an age old question - Who really invented the wetsuit? Was it Jack O'Neill? Was it the Meistrell brothers? Was it Bev Morgan? Was it Hugh Bradner? The question dates back to the early 1950's when the wetsuit was first "discovered". Early versions of wetsuits were designed for divers (and the rubber was quite stiff) but they were soon adapted by surfers who liked to leave the "beavertail" unattached for greater freedom of movement. By the early 1960's the Neoprene "Short John" suits - shown here modeled by Mickey Munoz - had become the wetsuit of choice. The "Long John" came with long legs and long arms and was helpful in the Winter months. If you had been on the beach at "Little Dume" (aka Point Dume) in the summer of 1960 you would have seen this fine example of surfboard design and what surfers were wearing at that time. Left to right - Vicki Newton, Rob Foster, Dennis Liberty, Skip Newton, Dave Rochlen and Unidentified. Six years later Dave Rochlen (wearing the yellow tank top) went on to fame and fortune when he designed and sold brightly colored surf clothing that he called "Jams". Congratulations to @paulstrauch , SHACC Board Member, on last night's induction into the Hawai'i Waterman Hall of Fame. Paul Strauch - one of the most influential figures in the world of surfing back in the 1960s. Founder of the cheater-five and the first to use bottom turns in large waves, Strauch won numerous surfing titles and was a member of the prestigious Duke Kahanamoku Surf Team. Greg Tucker at Honolua Bay. Rich Harbour of Harbour Surfboards took this photo of the legendary Greg Tucker in 1966. Greg Tucker was a long time Harbour Surf Team Rider and was featured in many of Ron Stoner's early surf photos. 1967 - It was the very peak of Hippiedom, but there was Mr. Fred Hemmings (aka Mr. Conservative; aka Straight Ahead Fred), Fred's sister Mia and Paul Strauch making an appearance (or possibly a statement) in San Franciso's Haight Ashbury district. It would be interesting to know if this Hawaiian group left any lasting memories behind.
