The fight in Puerto Rico is not just against the governor.
It’s against the colonial status that America has kept us in for over a century. It’s against the hundreds of schools that were closed in the last 3 years. Against the fact that millions may loose their pensions due to bond debts that America forced us sell, bankrupting the island. Against the unelected and colonial Fiscal Board that Obama signed to law, giving 7 bankers control of the countries finances. Against the poor response to Hurricane Maria that led to thousands of preventable deaths. Against the poor living conditions across the island, Against the vulture capitalists buying our land en masse in the wake of destruction.
Puerto Rico is dying.
We lost 4% of the population last year alone. Jobs are low paying and scarce. We are twice as poor as the poorest state, yet our cost of living is 13% higher than the U.S. Our public colleges are being threatened with massive budget cuts and many of us don’t have access to healthy food.
It’s a constant struggle and it feels like we’re constantly being attacked from every direction.
So when the arrests occurred last week and the chat’s were leaked, that was merely the last straw on the camel’s back.
