Helmets, Gravity, and Human Superiority.
Helmets, Gravity, and Human Superiority.
August 1st is International Helmet Awareness Day. It’s the day Riders4Helmets started, in the wake of US Olympian Courtney King-Dye’s traumatic brain injury, to raise awareness and promote equestrian helmet use. Helmet retailers join in by giving discounts and tomorrow is the day. This is the fifth year and every year I write about helmets because it’s so important. Every year, I repeat…

Helmet or No Helmet?
Helmet or No Helmet?
The 5th annual Riders4 Helmets International Helmet Awareness Day was yesterday–Saturday, July 12, 2014. Some tack stores, including my favorite Dover Saddlery, offer a sweepstakes for a free helmet, and many more tack stores–Smartpak, Stateline Tack–offer one-day discounts on their most popular helmets.
Riders4Helmets was founded following the accidentDressage Olympian Courtney King-Dye’s had a…

Wrestling with Helmet Safety.
Wrestling with Helmet Safety.
I almost got in a bar fight a few months back. It was bad: I got frustrated and when that happens, I resort to sarcasm. It was not professional of me, and I would feel better about this whole episode if I was sorry. The problem is that I’m not sorry.
Riders4Helmets International Helmet Awareness Day is coming right up. On Saturday, July 12th, equestrian retailers around the globe will be…

One time, I watched a perfectly fine, trustworthy horse stumble at the walk fall to her knees and roll right over her rider.
The rider walked away with only a cracked helmet.
Tell me a helmet isn't necessary on your "bomb-proof" horse, I dare you.
If I hadn't been wearing my helmet when I fell off of Moonbeam in '09 I probably would have died on the "best day of my life so far".
I would have missed so many more best-days-so-far after that.
International Helmet Day.
Seeing as it's International Helmet Day, I want to advocate it. Back in February, I took a fall off my horse at one of her fastest gaits and had a extremely high energy crash. I hit head first, and then slammed my shoulder into the ground, resulting in my collarbone snapping in half and then separating itself about an inch and a half. I was in danger of it puncturing my lung or sub-clavian artery. Had I not been wearing my helmet when I fell, I most likely would have been dead today. It's hard for me to imagine and it scares the hell out of me every time I think of it, but my skull would have been shattered when I hit the ground, and I would've died before the ambulance could even leave the station. So everyday I wake up now, I thank who ever it is out there, whether it be god, the universe, spirits, etc. for another day doing the things I love and being with the people I care about. I'm proud of myself, and my grandmother for nagging at me to wear a helmet. And I am thankful that I only came out of it with a few bruises and one broken bone. Yes, it is a pain in the ass to heal, but I'm glad that I'm still here instead of six feet under or cremated. I have made many great friends through my healing process, and I'm just thankful that I had the chance to meet them. So please, everyone. Even if you don't ride horses, even if you're just going for a ride on the ATV or Dirt bike, or even if you're just on a pedal bike, please, please, please wear a helmet. Anything can happen at any time. I didn't think I was going to crash like I did off my horse, but it happened. Even if we don't talk much, even if I haven't seen you in years or even never met you, I still care if you live or die. riders4helmets started this event when an US Olympic Dressage rider Courtney King-Dye suffered a serious head injury in March 2010 while on horseback. She remained in a coma for a month following the accident. Courtney was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and is still undergoing rehabilitation
