Right Time Right Place
Philip Jones Griffiths
Born in North Wales in 1936 Griffiths became a full-time freelance photographer for the Observer in 1961. He had studied pharmacy in Liverpool and worked as a night manager in Boots in London and at the same time was working part-time as a photographer for the Manchester Guardian.
He first went to Vietnam in 1966, working for the Magnum Agency. His images were very graphic and concentrated on the plight of the Vietnamese people which made them difficult to sell in America. Griffiths was a pacifist and this was reflected in his photography.
A collection of his Vietnam photographs were published as a book in 1971, Vietnam Inc, this publication went on to change the public's perception of that war. Henri Cartier-Bresson is quoted saying about Griffiths "Not since Goya has anyone portrayed war like Philip Jones Griffiths."
In 1980 Griffiths became president of Magnum for five years
Griffiths died in 2008 from cancer, his entice archive was purchased by the National Library of Wales, 150,00 slides and 30,000 prints.
