YAAAAY COSPLAY QUESTION

11. Which cosplay took the longest to make?

Ummm I’m pretty sure it was Sumia, but only because I spent a lot of time just kind of staring at it and hoping it would make itself!

But I think I’m going to have to give it Terra. Nearly every piece of it was made from scratch! Not to mention that I made two capes, one of which had about ~30 flowers on it! Terra was a project, but one I really enjoyed!

A whole new world of cosplay opened up for me when I realized that I can wear more than one costume a day.

I think one of my favorite con memories is the screaming competition I had with rainbow-rex ishgards as Athenas and Apollo. Just yelling "I'm Athena Cykes and I'm fine!" And "I'm Apollo Justice and I'm fine!" as loud as we can was so much fun!

4. Stupidest thing you’ve done for cosplay?

i have done a lot of things for cosplay

many of them stupid. 

But I think the most stupid is sacrificing my health for it. Like, clearly when you have a passion for something it tends to overwhelm you and such, but I’ve deprived myself of sleep and starved myself in order to make and “look good” for cosplay respectively.

Don’t do that, even when you love something a lot, you shouldn’t ever risk your health for it.

Now I just have to practice what I preach ahaha

11. Is there a type of character you’ll never cosplay? 

Honestly? No. I’m pretty open minded to stuff, and I love cosplaying a hell of a lot, so I want to try a lot of different styles and characters. I’m the person who wants to cosplay personality types from Yuna (FFX) to Dalia Hawthorne, and I’m okay with cosplaying guys or aliens or whatever. 

I guess the way I wouldn’t cosplay something would be due to me being opposed to what the character was from. If that makes sense?

Yaaaay cosplay asks!

1. One of your best cosplay memories?

Aaaahhh geez this is so hard. 

Obviously there’s the time I met happy-dash-salesman in Rinoa and he was in Squall, but that’s kinda become the Uncle Iroh of memories at this point ahaha.

Something about meeting rainbow-rex still gets me. I have so much in common with her, and I will never forget how she offered to fix my Terra (FFVI) cape after some guy stepped on it and ripped it…. It made me really happy to meet someone so sweet! Also getting my cosplay fixed isn’t the worst thing either ahaha

Man there are so many great memories… I love going to photoshoots and seeing old friends, or making new friends, so it’s hard to pick just one thing out.

17. Ever had any interactions with kid while you’ve been in cosplay?

Not exactly? I’ve seen the cutiest kids ever. At PAX I saw an Elsa with her Olaf dad, and a friggin fantastic Cloud Strife from a 8 year old boy. No seriously, he had the shoulder armor and everything. 

I think my favorite though was a little girl who did Child Zelda from OOT. She was so graceful and sweet, and when I took a picture she bowed and humbly thanked me, just like a princess would. Honestly she made me go “I hope I can be that princess-like when I cosplay Zelda!”

I really wanna do Disney Princesses sometime, and maybe do some parties eventually, so I guess I’ll have better stories then!

I'm looking to cosplay sumia at anime Midwest, do you think 3 months is too little amount of time to make my costume? I'll have a month of summer break worth of time to work on it too. Also, do you have any tips on the armor?

Oh wow, first off thank you so much, I’m absolutely flattered that you would come to me! It gives me a nice warm fuzzy feeling! 

Alright now on to actual important things. 

I had about 3 months to finish Sumia and other costume, and ultimately the only parts I didn’t get to make were her gauntlets and her belt. Now this was due to outside stresses, like homelife, depression, and traveling back and forth to work on costume parts. 

Honestly, if you have a whole month of break, and none of the stresses I did, you should be able to do this as long as you manage your time properly. 

  Armor Tips!

Okay! So! Sumia’s armor is very complex at first, but I’ve found that as long as you break down a costume into separate pieces, it helps you be able to organize your crafting. 

Make sure to break down her armor. 

2 Neck Pieces

2 Pauldrons

2 Bracers

2 Bracer details

2 Elbow pieces

2 Gauntlets

2 Wing Clips

Bottom layer of the breastplate

2 Cup pieces (for the breastplate)

2 Breastplate details

Now this can all look a little intimidating, and trust me I felt the same way, but breaking it down helps so much in encouraging yourself. 

Start with something small in order to really get yourself going. The first pieces I did were the bracers and the wing clips, they were simple and also an important piece. 

From there I was able to get enough courage to continue working on the different pieces. 

For her neck pieces, I noticed they were 2 pieces made into 1. So I seperated them. And then glued them together.

For the breastplate, I made one piece as regular breastplate instead of a cuped one. Then I used the details, the swirly things, as an area to shape where the cups would go. 

Then I was lucky enough to have these circle craft foam shape in order to make the cups! 

Honestly most of this stuff is for sanity’s sake. If you keep knocking out tasks like that day by day, you’ll do great!
