You were kissing on the warm mattress late into the night, your favorite lullaby to drift off to sleep, and something that since the beginning had turned out to be an instinctual habit of all of your nights.
Those were the last kisses of the day, the goodnight ones, when you kissed ‘‘sweet dreams’’ lips on lips and after which the taste of him remained in your senses all through the night until the next morning. You would find your place of belonging in the hollow of his neck once your lips had exchanged a night night bedtime story, or he would shelter your body with the security of his own pressed to your back, plant a quick peck on your shoulder and wave his fingers in between yours to let them rest against your chest. On these occasions, he always liked to playfully brush your bare foot with his socked toes for a last goodbye, emphasizing your undying certainty that he was right there.
His gaze was hazy and soft when he pulled away from your mouth, and his kisses were sweet and minty, as they often did after his bedtime routine. You would never get tired of the way he kissed you. Passionate and warm, sometimes messy or silly in between laughter, and always dizzying in the gentle way his lips cradled yours. Even a simple kiss with him was like making love. Truthfully, many things with him felt like making love; the briefest of caresses, and even those things that didn't revolve around physicalness.
With Arthur you'd discovered that some ways to touch each other weren't about skins colliding or hands meeting. That certain touches managed to go beyond contact. That if a person was close to your heart, then that kind of closeness was more than enough to feel their touches on you. And you always felt his touch, no matter where he was.
He had shifted away but you kept the hold of him, making sure that your chests remained flush against one another. You racked your hands through his hair, swiping the tumbling curls out of his forehead in doing so, before you cradled your palm to the back of his head to secure him as close to you as you wanted him to.
You hummed as you drank in the beauty of his slumber state and how soft his freshly-washed locks felt gathered in between your fingers, his slow breathing blowing on your upper lip by this extreme closeness, and how handsome he looked right after a kiss, with his lips leaning outward towards you for one more and arousal sheathed in softness settled on the corners of his eyes.
The beauty and magic that was Arthur Fleck was a rare one, a sweet half who matched so perfectly with your heart and your dreams that it was hard to believe he was finally there, in your life and in your arms alike.
Moments like this you thought about the significance his presence held in your life. Getting home to him knowing that your time was finally all for you & Arthur was what made worth it all you had to face during the day. He was your strength, and you were his. As long as you saw him laying in front of you after a long day, you knew there was actually very little that you couldn't face, alone and yet always together. Every day was a mutual nurturing each other's souls with the seed of your love ready to blossom into healing in the most withered parts of your wounds.
Splayed out in front of your vision, as beautiful as a special reverie and so healing to your soul that you struggled to believe he was actually real, you hoped that the side of his mattress would never be empty again, empty without him. Now that you've found your twin flame you no longer wanted to sparkle alone in the dark, but join your flame with his own and widen the fervent glow in within the room to stretch out further and further away. You felt brighter and inextinguishable when you were together.
There was something ready bubbling in your throat that your heart ached to tell him, words you knew had waited for Arthur all of your life and belonged solely to him. No matter how many times a day you told him how much you loved him, it was never enough to express and let him realize exactly the vastness of your feelings for him. But tonight those words would lead you a little bit closer to that goal.
‘‘I want to spend the rest of my life with you,’’ you breathed against his mouth as you held him, making it sound almost like a confession filled with longing.
He chuckled heartily, the kind of chuckle that used to make his shoulders bounce on the spot lightly and followed a endearing hitch that you adored. The kind of chuckle he used to make when he wanted to believe that something was as true as he hoped it was.
‘‘You would have to marry me,’’ he told you, a little teasing, a little serious, a little hopeful.
A smile tugged at the corners of your mouth. Determination stirred you to bring your fingers to his face, tracing the apple of his cheek with your thumb with purposeful intent. ‘‘I would marry you,’’ you admitted earnestly.
Eyes sparkling, he repeated ‘‘You would?’’ with a hidden layer of gentle surprise, if anything to himself.
‘‘Yes, I would,’’ you whispered, then brushed the tip of his big nose with yours. He giggled when then you nuzzled his face and uttered a playful, but sincere I do against his mouth, your heart opening up to the ways his joy expressed itself with you. Making him laugh was as loved as the sound of his laughter.
‘‘I do, I do, I do, I do.’’ You kept murmuring I dos among some more sloppy kisses to his lips, with your voice turning increasingly delirious with abandon and wanton and the rapturous chuckles he gave you as a response to your unrestrained affection, tongue groping into his warm mouth and the desire of him everywhere. Your kisses grew heated and messier as he grew giggling and in love in your arms; with you, and all he'd found thanks to you and your unconditional way of loving him.
As his lips met your eager declarations of love, he grabbed the bedsheet with an amused grin and draped it over your heads to hide your vows from the rest of the world. He kept kissing you, to the point of breathlessness, letting you feel like you'd been making love all along.
